About John Lee

I lead YMCA Norfolk, an amazing organisation passionate about transforming young lives. We believe that every young person should be able to feel that they belong, can contribute and thrive. We are hope-filled for the young people who we serve, believing that everyone has equal value and huge potential no matter their past background or current circumstances. We see the their potential which inspires us.We empower young people through our homelessness, therapeutic, youth, education and childcare services.We also run Williams' Kitchen, our cafe with a cause, based on Aylsham Road in Norwich and home to Explorers Soft Play. All the proceeds are invested into our charitable purposes.

    Each night YMCA Norfolk provides a safe and supportive home to over 220 young people across the county. Our therapeutic services provide 1-to-1 mental health support, offering tailored therapeutic intervention and counselling.We offer a safe place (youth groups) for hundreds of young people to seek advice around issues that may be affecting them such as mental health, bullying, healthy living. Our E-Learning Service provides online education to hundreds of pupils; whom are unable to access school. Muddy Puddles is our Ofsted rated Good, 90 place nursery based our community hub on Aylsham Road, Norwich. William's Kitchen and Explorers Soft Play is our cafe with a cause, providing a fantastic space for the community with all proceeds being invested in our charitable purposes.

    Launched a national whole family domestic abuse pilot.Norwich Connect was "Highly Commended " at the CYP Now Awards 2020.Recruited, trained and led a team of staff delivering new specialist domestic abuse support to victims, perpetrators and children. Responsible for the training of 1,000 professionals annually and pioneering a systemic cultural change towards Domestic Abuse in Norfolk.The service was independently evaluated by the University of Central Lancashire in order to guide national roll out.The service was hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House to enable her to hear directly from victims.

    Led teams providing support for Young Carers aged 6-24 across Norfolk. Taking an innovative and evidence based approach we expanded and re-defined Young Carers provision amongst the urgent need to diversify our incomes streams.Achievements• Won £975,000 worth of income from Local Authority, Big Lottery, Comic Relief, Children in Need including a mixture of tenders, payment by results contracts and grants. • Keynote speaker at the National Young Carers Conference in 2014 on effective partnership work with the local authority.• Invited to the All Parliamentary Party Group on Young Carers at the House of Lords.• Helping lead the charity through a major restructure including the complete rewriting of all policies, operating procedures and reporting systems.• Our work was featured 12 times across 6 different media outlets including the BBC, ITV and regional press with live interviews and documentary films.

    Led a team of Community Volunteer Co-ordinators across Norfolk to recruit, train and support 300 volunteers a year. Managed a specialist health scheme for NHS Norfolk and Norfolk County Council. Achievements • Developed new streams of income to help achieve the sustainability of the charity and negotiate successive rounds of funding cuts from our statutory funders.• Launched a bespoke volunteering website and social media profiles for volunteering opportunities in Norfolk which furthered the charity’s status as the key volunteering charity in Norfolk.• Initiated the “Be a friend campaign” with the influential newspaper Norwich Evening News. This was replicated in 3 of their other community titles across Norfolk and won national awards.
