John entered the Operating Engineers Local 3 Heavy Equipment Apprentice Program in Wadsworth, Nevada in 2000. Due to his extensive background in equipment operation from logging, John was moved from 236 on the list of apprentices to number 5 after testing. During his tenure with the operating engineers John worked on projects as large as the Gleana Creek Arch Bridge south of Reno, Nevada, which is one of the largest in North America. In 1999 John worked for Sha-Neva Sand and Gravel at Hirschdale, California, where he received accolades for the way that he ran equipment and production generated. Because of his equipment operating background John moved to Lake Tahoe, Nevada to do snow removal in the winter time, running an articulated front end loader with a powered front blade.

John was provisional night milker at the Clarke Family Dairy Farm, near Rochester, Washington. John milked and fed approximately 185 head of Holstein Cattle while their normal night milker recovered from injuries.

John ran excavator type loaders loading logs on log trucks, maintaining load balance and safety, sorted and stacked logs according to size, quality, and removed debris from the landing.

John spent 2 1/2 years as the Log Sort Yard Superintendent at Mayr Brothers Logging company handling an inventory of 38 million board feet of logs and the comings and goings of nearly 300 loads of inventory a day all the while maintaining materials for three on-site mill's. He created a much needed inventory tracking system which saved 2 days of inventory time per quarter as well as elevating accuracy.John also worked with both State and Federal officials about logging and the Endangered Species Act on behalf of Mayr Brothers Logging Company as well as all logging in the area. John was the only person out of 512 employees certified by the International Woodworkers Union and Mayr Brothers Logging Company to run every piece of equipment owned.
