I've been working in AI for nearly 30 years & achieved my PhD in Artificial Intelligence (Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Machine Learning (ML)) in 2005. Specialising in fundamental algorithm research to create more advanced learning machines, I'm interested in numerous aspects of AI & cognitive science, in particular, representational adequacies, natural language processing, feature extraction, signal fusion & hybrid systems for applied AI.I’m co-founder & head of AiLab (Artificial Intelligence Laboratory); a global company providing AI education, research & advisory with offices in the UK, Australia & New Zealand – I lead the development & delivery of AiLab workshops. As part of AiLab’s expansion, I launched an AiLab at Auckland University of Technology (‘AiLab at AUT’), where I also served as the AI Specialist in Residence & AI Ambassador (virtually). Additionally, I'm a member of Australia's Federal Government Artificial Intelligence Action plan committee, a PhD Supervisor to university students researching AI & co-founder of the smart web specialist company, koolth. An integral part of my career, I’m passionate about AI & creating environments where people can learn more about the field – my love for education came from a decade as a senior academic at a UK University teaching Artificial Intelligence at both masters & undergraduate levels & Computer Studies & Software Engineering at undergraduate level. I've also worked in a wide range of industries developing commercial-grade software for major global corporations.An Artificial Intelligence speaker for many years, I frequently run workshops & speak at events across the globe presenting key insights on AI trends, applications & the future impact on society & the workforce via AiLab. As an AI educator & advisor to government, industry & community, I also contribute to media interviews, radio discussions & publications. I'm humbled to have my academic & business career featured in the Million Plus 'Think Modern' campaign launched at the Palace of Westminster (UK).In my spare time I try to give back & enjoy assisting with tech events, social good initiatives & mentoring individuals in the tech community. I'm the co-founder of Adelaide AI meetup (the largest AI networking community in South Australia) & am an advisory board member for various organisations.
