Test Piot, EngineerEclipse Aerospace, Inc Apr 2012 - Apr 2017Albuquerque, New Mexico AreaI am once again at Eclipse test flying new production, as well as experimental test aircraft. Eclipse Aerospace has returned to the production of its new jet aircraft with lots of improvements. The necessity to do more with less have provided interesting challenges, such as flying both production and engineering test aircraft. As “collateral duties”, I fly an Eclipse for a local businessman, demonstration flights for customers (US, Europe and Africa) and maintenance test flights for the service department. With the extensive flying, I still get to do engineering and design work for Experimental Flight Test and performance analysis for Marketing.Eclipse has proved to be challenging and rewarding. -
Managing Technical Engineer - Flight Deck Human Factors EngineerHoneywell Aerospace - Advanced Technology Jul 2009 - May 2011Albuquerque, New Mexico AreaAdvanced Technology Research for FAA NextGen Initiative including: • Aircraft Merging and Spacing• Trajectory Based Operations • Controller/Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC)• Pilot Performance• Flight Operations Research• Required Navigation PerformanceThe Controller/Pilot Data Link Communications project was extremely interesting because it introduced the concept of "text messaging" between the pilot and ATC in departure and terminal operations. I managed a team to develop a unique and novel solution to implementing this new technology using legacy FMS display equipment. Flight deck human factors played a big part on how to design the display (menu system) and design the flight crew procedures. I combined my flight experience and engineering analysis to provide leadership in developing a unique and novel solution. The design was a result of breaking out of a structured mind set, questioning assumptions on its use and intuitively working with concepts and ideas. The pilot interface was tested for pilot performance and crew acceptance in a simulator using current and qualified commercial pilots. The results were successful. My team was recognized by the company by naming us co-owners of a patent. Creativity is less about what we create, and more about the satisfaction of who we become by sharing what we create.Because this was a two-year contract and my passion is flying, I am pursuing opportunities as a production test pilot. The insight gained by combining my analytical problem solving, creativity and systems thinking skills in a pure design capacity has sharpened my flight test observational skills, as well as systems and procedures knowledge. -
Uav Production Test Pilot/InstructorHoneywell Aerospace - Uav T-Hawk Project May 2009 - May 2011Albuquerque, New Mexico AreaBecause engineers were needed to design a new and larger UAV, the company reassigned engineers who had been flying and testing UAVs to their original design positions. To replace the engineers, technicians who never flew a UAV were assigned to UAV production testing and new-hire employees were assigned to support crews. The Director of Operations tasked me to develop and run a program to teach technicians to perform UAV flight testing. The challenge was not only to determine the optimal way to teach UAV systems, procedures, situational awareness and standardization, but how to instill an attitude of safety, confidence and professionalism while working as a productive flight crew. The subject material was taken from what I learned teaching Production Test Pilots at Eclipse, as well as teaching private pilot students the aircraft, procedures, safety, regulatory requirements, ground operations, and of course, flying skills. I divided the training syllabus into itemized training sub-topics.The Navy Nuclear Power Submarine program uses a highly effective method of a structured and disciplined training environment. Following the basic idea, I created a program containing a detailed topic list of exactly what the student must know and what to study. Some of the topics, such as fueling, was taught as "show and do", but other topics such as regulations, procedures, profiles were required to be studied, tested then "signed-off" in a detailed formal training syllabus. Within two months the new crews took over responsibility of ground and flight testing the factory UAVs. During the eight month life of the UAV contract, the production did not have a single accident or incident and I was complimented for their efficiency, safety and professionalism. -
Production Test PilotEclipse Aviation Mar 2007 - Feb 2009Albuquerque, New MexicoI inspected and flight tested newly manufactured Eclipse jet aircraft. This included observing, detecting, and documenting aircraft problems for effective troubleshooting and root cause analysis. I prided myself on gaining extensive and specialized knowledge of the Eclipse aircraft systems through studying the assembly process on the production floor and studying the Eclipse design documents. I became the "answer man" for systems questions.Because of planned expansion, Eclipse hired several pilots at once. To incorporate the pilots and to ensure standardization, I developed a production pilot training program with a comprehensive training manual that completely defined the program. I used the same framework building the Production Flight Test Training Program as I did designing a training program for several Part 121 airlines. The same was true for the Standard Operating Procedures - the department did not have one. It became my responsibility to write one. Any department that operates aircraft establishes "guard rails" for the pilots and procedures and standards that work for the department.I identified an obvious and urgent need for a formal, standardized process to capture and track flight squawks instead of using pen and paper to document squawks. I used my software development skills to improve the process by creating a database management application. The result was an error-free, enterprise quality application for mechanics and pilots for an easy way to enter and track flight squawks. The data base provided a valuable tool for troubleshooting squawks. I provided the determination and tenacity to see that a good idea is driven into practice. It is sad that Eclipse ceased operations, because we created the Production Flight Test department as a model for the company in efficiency, standardization and training. Contributing to problem solving was one of the biggest satisfactions of working in the Production Flight Test Department and at Eclipse. -
Aircraft Ferry And Test PilotRp Aviation Jun 2006 - Feb 2007Miami, FlFlying for Bob Peacon was an adventure. I've never met a man who knew so many people in so many airlines. As a result, Bob put together crews to ferry aircraft for start-up airlines all over the world, such as Adam Air in Jakarta, Indonesia . An invaluable experience for preparing me for production test flights was learning to thoroughly inspect the aircraft and asking the right questions about the mechanical condition of the aircraft. Taking an aircraft over the Pacific that you've never flown and has been in storage for years forces you to find potential problems. A typical challenge was to take a B737 that has been sitting in the Arizona desert for years and fly it half way around the world. When the mechanic in a rusted van pulls up next to the aircraft and says that it is "good to go", I'm thankful that I spent the time to gain thorough understanding of the aircraft systems. You can never know enough about your aircraft. I gained valuable experience in FAA certification of upgrade EFIS avionics in B-737 cargo aircraft.

Airline CaptainFalcon Air Express May 1996 - May 2006Miami, FlThe biggest difference in the execution of responsibility of a charter captain and a major airline captain is that a charter captain does not have as much support and ready resources as a major airline captain. As a result, a charter captain will need to come up with solutions using very limited resources.A case in point is spending the night in a Tampa FBO with 170 passengers because of a diversion due to coastal fog at the destination. Dealing directly with their concern of not getting home and spending the night at an FBO helped alleviate the passengers' anxiety. I've learned that it is not the change that causes anxiety, but it is how we deal with the transition from what was lost (not getting home) to the new condition of having to spend the night at an FBO.My philosophy is that bad news does not age well. As a result, people thank me for telling them up front about delays or problems. An important and challenging role as a production test pilot is acting as a customer demonstration and acceptance pilot. Known for making people feel comfortable in the cockpit, I'm alert and supportive to customer's and colleague's needs. The leadership responsibility of charter airline captain has developed my focus on the customer, as well as the crew. I've learned there is a connection between leadership and customer service. I have found that serving and supporting unleashes more energy, talent, and commitment than commanding and controlling.Do you not put forth higher quality effort when you believe that the people leading you are there to serve your needs and not just their own?

Airline Technical Writer And InstructorAmeriflight Corp Jan 1996 - Jan 1998Miami, FlDesign and write manuals required by Part 121 airlines for certification. While working for Falcon Air Express I also worked as a consultant to assist airlines through their certification process, to pass FAA inspections, and teaching flight crews. I quickly became the expert on researching and writing airline Flight Operations Training Manuals and General Operations Manuals. The company to provided flight crew instruction for the cargo airlines in Miami. I designed and taught Crew Resource Management to Arrow Air Cargo flight crews. An incredible learning experience for both them and me.Just some of the other work I did:• Ground school and simulator training programs for B-707, B-727, DC-8, B-757, L-1011, and several commuter aircraft.• Lesson Plans and workbooks• Weight and Balance manuals for A300 and L1011 aircraft.• Weight and Balance computer application for cargo airline loadmasters.• Station Manuals• Emergency Manuals• Flight Attendant Training Manuals• Minimum Equipment ListThe experience of writing technical and flight operations manuals has benefited me in every position I have had since. The best example is writing the Operating Procedures Manual and the Training Manual for Eclipse Production Flight Test Department.

Contract PilotFaucett - Peru Dec 1991 - Mar 1996L-1011 Flight Engineer and First OfficerA-300 First OfficerF/E InstructorCan you remember a time in your career when someone took a chance and hired you based solely on a recommendation? For me, being offered a chance to fly "heavy iron" in South America was that chance. It is rare that someone will believe in you enough to hire you based on your word and character. A small group of American pilots were hired to fly for Faucett - Peru Airlines. Our job was to fly between Miami and Peru and then later, train our Peruvian replacements. The contract continued when Faucett leased an L-1011 to APA, a Dominican Republic airline flying between D.R. , Miami, and New York. The L-1011 was replaced with two A-300s.Flying with and learning from experienced airline captains while flying in some of the most challenging areas in South and Central America has shaped my flying skills, cockpit discipline and crew resource management.

Expedition Member - Engineer And PilotGreenland Expedition Society May 1992 - Sep 1992GreenlandOne of the greatest compliments I ever received was to be invited to work as a team member to search and retrieve a P-38 from under the Greenland icecap by Pat Epps.LINK: [http://www.eppsaviation.com/about-us_the-lost-squadron.php]Each person's job on the Greenland icecap can be summed up by a quote from the founder of the US Nuclear Navy, Admiral Hyman Rickover: "...no one involved in a job can divest himself of responsibility for its successful completion." If there is anything that I learned from 4 months on the Greenland Icecap is that if someone tells you that something can't be done, don't believe it. If we can dig out a P-38 (Glacier Girl) from under 265 feet of ice, then anything can be done.LINK: [http://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/FEATURE-glaciergirl-backstory.html] I spent a lot of time rebuilding the generators to keep them running. It wasn't a glamorous job, but up there "it's not about me." It was not hard to find places to best help the team. The 4 months on the icecap was an exceptional education in ingenuity, leadership, teamwork and sheer determination from the most diverse group of adventurers, visionaries, explorers, mechanics, leaders, builders and even engineers. One explorer and leader was Norman Vaughan. Born in 1905, when Teddy Roosevelt was president and polar exploration was in its heyday, Norman was weaned on tales of Robert Peary, Roald Amundsen, and Sir Robert Falcon Scott. Norman was part of history as the chief dog driver on the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition in 1928-30. He persuaded top brass to risk a brilliant scheme to evacuate wounded soldiers by dog sled from the Battle of the Bulge with 209 dogs and 17 drivers.
