Mr. Funderburk was Principal-in-Charge at SoundEarth Strategies for all projects associated with the redevelopment of contaminated sites (brownfields). Several of these recent or representative projects include a 1.5-acre commercial laundry and dry cleaner in South Lake Union, a whole city block redevelopment in West Seattle with a gas station gasoline groundwater plume, and redevelopments on an 8-acre auto wrecking yard, a 3-acre historical steel mill and former cement plant, a 16-acre industrial property previously used for heavy equipment and truck maintenance and repair, a 1908 auto sales and engine repair facility, a former transmission repair shop, four former gasoline service stations, a marine engine repair facility, a waterfront bulk-storage petroleum tank farm, and seven other former dry cleaner facilities that are being redeveloped into mixed-use commercial and residential space. Mr. Funderburk worked on numerous Phase I and Phase II environmental investigations and directs the technical support staff at Sound Earth Strategies, and takes the projects forward into remedial design and construction/implementation. SoundEarth has specialized and proprietary remedial cleanup methods involving in-situ injection to treat the groundwater contaminant plumes related to their project work on redevelopment sites. -

Urban Redevelopment was a specialty environmental consulting firm working exclusively on the strategy and planning for cleanup activities associated with redevelopment of historic industrial properties in the Puget Sound region. Mr. Funderburk focused on environmental and real estate development feasibility issues for brownfield sites for local developers. He identified environmental issues, prepared cleanup approaches, and planned the integration of remedial activities with site redevelopment work. The principals of Urban Redevelopment completed numerous site assessments, contamination investigations, and remedial cleanups of brownfield sites in Ballard, South Lake Union, in the Duwamish River industrial corridor, and in industrial sectors of the Green River Valley areas of Kent, Renton, Auburn, Sumner, Tacoma, and Olympia. Urban Redevelopment was the lead consultant for the cleanup and redevelopment of the OII Landfill site, an EPA CERCLA program site in Monterey Park, California. This property was being redeveloped into a 500,000-square-foot commercial retail regional mall, and Mr. Funderburk was the assigned Project Coordinator for the requirements of the Consent Decree with the EPA Region 9.

Principal, Manager Of Industrial OperationsHart Crowser 1986 - 1997Mr. Funderburk's background and experience has been in the field supervision of site evaluation and cleanup activities for environmental pollution remediation. At Hart Crowser, Mr. Funderburk was the Manager of the Property Assessment program and was the technical lead on projects involving site contamination assessment, characterization remedial investigation, and cleanup feasibility. He was also responsible for health and safety on field activities involving hazardous materials. He conducted training of field staff and prepared health and safety plans for field projects. Mr. Funderburk worked in the environmental cleanup business before working for Hart Crowser. He has responded to numerous environmental emergencies including leaking railroad tank cars of pesticides, flammable liquids, corrosives, and compressed gases, leaking underground and aboveground storage tanks of petroleum products, and highway incidents involving spilled drums and tanker cars of chemical products. Prior to working in hazardous material cleanups, Mr. Funderburk completed approximately 300 compliance audits on a wide range of facilities including hospitals, laboratories, electronic manufacturers, airplane manufacturers, petroleum refiners, and hazardous waste disposal facilities. Compliance audits have involved all aspects of health and safety in industrial facilities including airborne contaminant assessment, ventilation design evaluation, machine guarding, training of employees for hazard awareness and protection, accident/illness record keeping review, and compliance documentation. -
Operations ManagerCrosby And Overton Remedial Cleanup 1983 - 1986Washington StateMr Funderburk performed remedial cleanup under the first Department of Ecology cleanup action contract, a $2,000,000 yearly contract for the period from 1983 to 1986. Under supervision by Ecology spill response and cleanup staff, Mr. Funderburk completed hundreds of cleanup responses to industial facilities, and roadside transportation spills across the whole state. Notable projects included an emergency cleanup of a midnight pesticide dump in spring time along the rising banks of the Okanogan River, containment and cleanup of a leaking pesticide tanker truck near the Duwamish River, installation of an engineered cap to prevent leaching from a gold mining heap leach pile in Tonasket, Okanogan County, the emergency response containment and transload of a leaking tank car of liquid anhydrous ammonia in the Interbay area in Seattle, spill response and cleanup of a 1 million gallon release of diesel fuel from a ruptured pipeline within 200 feet of the Green River, support to the EPA response to the Everett Tire fire along the Snohomish River, multiple meth lab site cleanups, the direction of the 13 agency response to a road fire resulting from pyrolisis of crumbled tires used as fill under SR-101 near Ilwaco, WA, several Ecology directed responses at abandonned waste/recycling facilities, and assessment and cleanup of two state-owned facilities operated by the WA Departments of Correction and Natural Resources. Under this renewed yearly contract, Mr. Funderburk completed more than 250 spill responses and subsequent cleanups at industrial sites, and at transportation accidents across the major industrial areas in Washington State.

Field Inspector - Wisha ComplianceWashington Department Of Labor & Industries 1980 - 1983Western WashingtonAs a field inspector for Labor and Industries, Mr. Funderburk inspected over 200 different industrial operations for compliance assessment during his WISHA tenure Mr. Funderburk specialized in the operations and practices of the specific state industries associated with metal plating, aerospace industry suppliers, the Boeing Company manufacturing facilities, dry cleaner operations, with the Anacortes, WA gasoline refinery facilities, and with hazardous waste site cleanups. Subsequent to this preparedness exercize, Mr. Funderburk served as the WISHA representative on one of the first EPA Superfund sites in Washington, the cleanup stage of the EPA directed response at the Western Processing waste recycling facility in the Kent Valley.
