I started my legal career as a commercial trial lawyer at Leonard, Street and Deinard (now Stinson Leonard Street) for almost 20 years, focusing primarily on products liability and construction litigation. I then joined Medtronic's legal department in 2003. I wore several hats there: managing MDT's litigation and providing legal advice to its legacy Neuromodulation business on issues ranging from HIPPA, anti-kickback, off-label promotion, internal compliance investigations, general commercial transactional advice and general healthcare law. I am now providing legal consulting services through The General Counsel, Ltd. We're a small group of attorneys who formerly worked within large companies who are offering legal services to companies which may have need of additional legal staffing for discrete projects or to quickly fill a gap in legal staffing for a few hours a week on a continuing basis. For example, from 1986-1998, I represented a Louisiana death row inmate, Alvin Scott Loyd, and helped him get his death sentence reversed by the Fifth Circuit and retried in 1998. The jury voted unanimously for a life sentence. He is now serving his sentence at Angola. In my previous careers I taught elementary school (5th & 6th grades) and was a professional freelance photographer, writing and illustrating with photographs, "Luis" (Prism Press, Detroit, 1976), a bilingual Spanish/English storybook for use in English as a second language classrooms.
