About John Graybeal

WIth many years experience managing collaborative projects for scientific communities, I've enjoyed leading distributed, multi-cultural, and multi-national projects. My main specializations are metadata and semantics, with a side interest in promoting FAIR and open research data. As needed I also perform outreach, operations, executive liaison, and fundraising roles to make projects successful.

  • Stanford University
    Cedar/Bioportal Technical Program Manager
    Stanford University Jun 2015 - Oct 2023
    Stanford, Ca, Us
The Center for Expanded Data Annotation and Retrieval (CEDAR, http://metadatacenter.org) has created an easy-to-use unified metadata framework that researchers in all scientific disciplines can use to create consistent, easily searchable metadata. The CEDAR project applies best metadata and software development practices to create the easiest, most valuable metadata pipelines and processes. The RADx Data Hub is an NIH initiative to capture the data from NIH Research on Advanced Diagnostics awards, which studied novel aspects of Covid Diagnostics. I worked with multiple partner programs, eventually providing technical leadership across a partnership of Stanford University, Booz Allen Hamilton, and RENCI. The BioPortal project (http://www.bioontology.org/BioPortal) provides an open repository of biomedical ontologies, and a set of related tools and software. Both the semantic content, and the software platform, have been heavily used by the biomedical community for the last 10 years. BioPortal was created by the National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO), a center established by the National Institutes of Health. BioPortal is entering a new phase with the establishment of the OntoPortal Alliance (https://ontoportal.org). As the de facto coordinator of the Alliance, I work with researchers from around the world who have deployed OntoPortal, an open source distribution of BioPortal software, for their own communities. Together the members of the OntoPortal Alliance are advancing software and support for OntoPortal to improve semantic adoption in future scientific research.I work closely with Principal Investigator Dr. Mark Musen to lead these projects. My roles include coordinating the activities of the team, serving as the product owner/product manager, managing project and financial plans, and working with the co-investigators, collaborators, Scientific Advisory Board, and staff to resolve issues and facilitate progress. (And of course fundraising!)
