Recreation Realty was established in 1973 for the purpose of providing more comprehensive service to our clients. John Hensley, founder, had been selling real estate in the Nevada City, Scotts Flat Lake area since 1970 working for a Bay Area company that did not have a home base in Nevada County. John wanted to provide a local team of service professionals, so he opened his own Recreation Realty company at it's present location across from the Scotts Flat Lake turn off on Highway 20 east in 1973. With expanding business, the company added a second office at 432 Broad Street at the top of Broad in downtown Nevada City. Today, John and his wife Sandra Brown have continued the high quality of service that Recreation Realty has always been noted for. John served on the Board of Directors for KVMR Radio for five years. During his term, John was active on the Building Committee for the new home of KVMR and Nevada Theatre's new backstage. The new facility opened in January at 120 Bridge Street on the corner of Spring Street. The KVMR and Nevada Theatre partnership is a very special collaboration for our community.

John's career started on the Lorretta Young Show and ended seven years later with a pilot episode on the Donna Reed Show. John also played in the beloved Lassie the first year that Timmy took over for Jeff. Cloris Leachman played Timmy's mother and Jon Provost played Timmy. As adults, John and Jon reconnected and became close friends. They have been friends for over 20 years. John starred with Jennifer Jones in the movie Good Morning Miss Dove. John played a youngster from the slums whom Miss Dove (Jennifer Jones) has helped mould into a citizen with a fine sense of ethics". How many of us can claim Jennifer Jones moulded our sense of ethics? Chuck Conners played John's role as an adult in the movie. It was Conners' first movie after having been a baseball star. Robert Stack was also in Good Morning Miss Dove.John's acting career included roles in movies and television shows such as Wild Bill Hickok, Dupont Cavalcade of America, Life of Riley, Dragnet, Sherrif of Cochise, The Split Level Family, Stepmother, The Millionaire, and others. Because Stepmother was the true story of Abraham Lincoln, it was replayed every year on Mother's Day for 20 years.
