About John Hilton

I am Aurecon’s Global Capability Leader for Bridges and civil structures. I am responsible for the promotion of Aurecon’s technical brand in bridges, coordination and development of specific training and skills, input into resource allocation to bring our best capabilities to our clients, business development, promotion and development of digital engineering for bridges, shaping future capabilities in response to industry trends and Client drivers, as well as technical reviews and verifications and contribution to a culture of capturing, storing and sharing knowledge for the betterment of the group. I am one of only eight inaugural Design Directors of the Aurecon Design Academy. I am passionate about exploring new ideas, innovation, design led thinking and sustainable construction, and in helping to create and enable a professional environment where people can thrive and grow. I am Adjunct Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of NSW Engineering.With a career spanning over 40 years in bridge design and construction, I have an extensive project portfolio, within Australia, the Middle East, Asia, New Zealand and Africa. This experience encompasses a wide range of loadings, spans and structure types. I have presented over 70 technical papers at various technical forums covering a range of diverse initiatives throughout my career. My paper, “The circular economy: implications for bridges”, was awarded best paper at the international Concrete 2023 conference in Perth. I was invited to present a keynote address, “Sustainable bridges for the challenges of the millennium”, at the Austroads Bridge Conference, Adelaide in 2022 and to present a keynote address, “Timber bridges in Australia, where to from here”, at the international IABMAS Conference in Melbourne in 2018. I am chair of the main committee for the Bridge Standard, AS 5100. I am also a member and/or chair of various sub-committees of the AS 5100 Standard, including Steel and composite construction, Concrete, Timber, and Rehabilitation and strengthening of existing bridges. In 2016 I received the Roads Australia Ray Fisher Award. This award is presented annually to an individual for technical excellence and impact in the industry. In 2018 I was named by Engineer Australia as one of Australia’s 30 most innovative engineers and was also awarded the 2018 John Connell Gold Medal from Engineers Australia Structural College. I am a Board member of the Civil College Board, Engineers Australia.
