I'm a design leader, maker, builder, entrepreneur, and wearer of all the hats it takes to get the job done.I feel very lucky to have discovered design as a career that I love. When I was younger I pursued engineering, music, and business software consulting, all of which were interesting but none of which resonate with me the way design does.Recently, I built the design practice at Wyzant, where I joined as the first design hire and left as the product design lead. I loved that job not only because it allowed me to stay heavily involved in all aspects of the design process but also because of the tremendous impact we had on the lives of our students and tutors. I designed improvements to nearly every area of the product, I mentored talented team members, and I taught the entire company the value that design brings to the table. There were many successes to celebrate and a healthy dose of failures to learn from. It was an invaluable experience for professional growth. After Wyzant was successfully acquired, I took the opportunity to work as an independent contractor so that I could continue to grow and contribute as a designer while enjoying more time raising my young son. I'm grateful to the amazing companies (Noom, Brilliant, Deloitte, others) that have hired me to design product improvements that reached so many people. When I'm not tackling design problems, you'll probably finding me biking along the shore of Lake Michigan, tinkering with marble runs, or making music with my kid (we post on SoundCloud as Bronze Rockers).I'm now looking for a full-time principal or lead designer role where I can get my hands dirty making something great alongside other creative, enthusiastic people. My favorite projects are the ones where I get to apply my skills to products and services that make the world a happier, healthier place.Portfolio: JohnHorstman.com
