The Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance aims to close the digital divide in Australia, tackling access, affordability and digital ability. Over three million Australian are not digitally connected and many more don't have the skills and confidence to fully engage in the digital world . This is a deep, systemic social and economic challenge for Australia.That is why it can't be tackled by any one organisation or sector, it requires a wholistic systemic collective response - hence the Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance. Collaborative impact is not straightforward. John facilitated and progressed the establishment and development of the Alliance, helping to build the essential partnerships and frameworks to maximise impact and close the digital divide. Presently there are over 100 organisations involved. The Alliance is supported by Australia Post, Google, Infoxchange and Telstra.

Swinburne Leadership Institute promotes Leadership for the Greater Good across the public, private, and civil society sector.Leadership for the Greater Good is increasingly urgent as issues social-political and environmental challenges intensify. These challenges highlight the need for leadership that is cognizant of and responsive to the greater good. John contributed to the Institute’s mission to advance a renewal of leadership for the greater good. John’s role with SLI concluded with the Institute’s reduction in scope.

DKA is a Northern Territory statutory corporation with a national mandate to help build harmony, sustainability and wealth in the desert through collaboration-building, developing new approaches to address persistent challenges and to create opportunities. It was unique in its intention to build partnerships and value across multiple jurisdictions and sectors and to include Aboriginal and other remote Australians in a shared future.Key achievements:• Revenue tripled and staffing increased fourfold through attraction of external revenue including growing partnerships with key corporates, philanthropics and government agencies including, Qantas, Telstra, BHP Billiton, ARUP, TIO, Sidney Myer Fund, Prime Minister & Cabinet• Establishment of the Desert Knowledge Precinct including attraction of $10M of investment • Establishment of mission and strategy-driven programs, for example:o DKA’s intercultural leadership programs – the first leadership programs in Australia explicitly designed to bring Aboriginal and other Australians together to learn to lead and lead together to create a shared futureo remoteFOCUS – aiming to change how the governments administer, engage and govern remote Australia. Key elements of the recommended approach have now been taken up by governments in Indigenous Affairs (Empowered Communities, decentralisation/regionalisation of Australian Government Indigenous Affairs decision-making) and the work has influenced present Northern Territory regional governance models. o the Broadband for the Bush Alliance – aiming to maximise the opportunities of the digital revolution (and minimise the down sides) for people living in the bush• Establishment of an Approved Research Institute as a major strategy and business opportunity, enabling the attraction of new thinking, partners and Deductible Gift Recipient funds• Significant representational, lobbying and media engagement

With a total turnover of $100M (2006), Ngaanyatjarra Council is a significant enterprise which incorporated a number of businesses including an airline, fuel distribution, transport services, as well as health, education, arts, municipal, employment programs and other support services. Key achievements:• Restructured Council operations, coupling them with community advisory committees and establishing new senior management structure and accountabilities• Established Australia’s first Regional Partnership Agreement between the Council and three tiers of Government, securing longer-term funding stability, solvency of four communities and national positioning• Closed down unprofitable businesses• Strengthened constituent engagement mechanisms and involvement in regional and business governance

After initially contributing to research John progressed to provide the overall business, corporate and financial management of the world-leading multidisciplinary group from which the world-renowned Cochlear ‘Bionic Ear’ emerged, as well as facilitating research management. At the time the group consisted of a number of distinct but inter-related entities, encompassing research, teaching, public hospital and private practice clinical components. During his tenure the group doubled in size to 140 people.Key achievements:• Involved in strategic and revenue development planning of the Bionic Ear Institute• Establishment of internal cost centres and user pays internal services, e.g. ICT, laboratory services• Negotiated significant FOC increase in available office and lab space• Established fundraising team and key partnerships, e.g. Telstra Bionic Ear Telethon• Secured funding for and managed the delivery of integrated IT solution across the whole group• Established professional corporate services departments and teams, including fundraising
