About John Iversen
I am a computational cognitive neuroscientist who studies music, language and the brain and develops new methods for real-world neuroscience combining mobile brain and body imaging and advanced analytics. A main focus is to understand how we perceive rhythm, and how this relates to education and learning and interpersonal interactions. I am passionate about understanding the brain mechanisms underlying our perception and learning about the world, examining the role of the motor system in shaping temporal perception, motor learning and the learning of spatial navigation. I am also directing the SIMPHONY project, an ambitious collaborative longitudinal study of the impact of music training on brain and behavioral development, and Co-Direct UCSD's new NEA Research Lab studying the impact of vocal training on school readiness. Methods include time-series analysis, spectrotemporal analysis, multivariate models of causality, blind source separation and neural networks.
Listed skills include Neuroscience, Science, Research, Matlab, and 18 others.

Associate Research Scientist In Computational Cognitive Neuroscience
- I lead an interdisciplinary lab in studies of the cognitive neuroscience of perception, learning, music and real-world cognition.
- An Associate Director of the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience, which develops state of the art time series, spectral and multivariate causal analysis methods for neural data and publishes open source EEGLAB.
- My work uses methods of brain data analysis, and real-world neuroimaging using Mobile Brain/Body Recording. I currently hold NIH, NSF and NEA grants to study the causal role of the motor system in auditory perception.
- Projects using MoBI to study brain and movement relationships during free human navigation, the development of complex motor skills such as Juggling, and the role of slow-motion training in VR.
- Executive Board Member of the Institute for Neural Computation, the Center for Human Development and researcher with the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center; Co-founder of the UC Music Experience Community Research.
- Highly experienced in data analysis using MATLAB, Python, R and C.
Associate Director, Swartz Center For Computational Neuroscience
Associate Project Scientist
Associate Fellow In Theoretical Neurobiology
Spent 11 glorious years on blue-sky research on music, brain, evolution, comparative behavior, and study of music and education. This is where I began using MEG to study neural mechanisms underlying rhythm perception, studied the impact of culture on perception, and began a collaborative study of rhythm in non-human animals.
Research Assistant In Auditory Neurophysiology
PhD Research at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary's Eaton-Peabody Laboratory using molecular imaging to describe learning across multiple levels of the the auditory system and the effects of hearing loss on brain organization.
