Sr. Software Engineer
Senior Software Engineer
Sole person responsible for development and support of information infrastructure for engineering and manufacturing of portable x-ray fluorescence element analyzers.• Invented and implemented an application engine architecture for the instrument that allows functionality to be added and customized without changing the executable. This freed the software team to concentrate on critical infrastructure and core system development for a new hardware platform.• Implemented applications to support workflows in C# using high-level data structures under .Net.• Implemented a system of xml and other configuration files and x-ray spectrum data files to combine generic models with instrument-specific x-ray spectra. The result was a custom calibration generated for each instrument during production. Over 2000 files are used to define the generic models that are combined with about 2500 x-ray spectra from each instrument. The new infrastructure reduces manufacturing time and cost, and improves quality by automating error-prone manual steps and using release-controlled generic models and hardware configuration information. The system reduces errors during engineering development and quality control failures during production. Production volume was more than doubled with no increase in production calibration labor cost or engineering production support time. The system is responsible for more than 90% of the instruments now manufactured by the Kennewick division.
Sr. Software Engineer (Contract)
Sole person responsible for development of next generation information infrastructure for engineering and manufacturing of portable x-ray fluorescence analyzers.• Learned theory and practice of x-ray fluorescence element detection and analysis.• Analyzed information flow in Engineering and Manufacturing necessary to support controlled release of instrument calibrations and use them in the production processes.• Reverse engineered a tangled web of Excel spreadsheet calculations, Visual Basic macros, and VB and C++ DLL’s. Extracted portions relevant to the next generation product and re-implemented in C#.
Senior Software Engineer (V- At Microsoft)
Contracted to Health Solutions Group, MicrosoftSole person responsible for trial of Microsoft Amalga LifeScience semantic database at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Computational Proteomics Lab. Also one of several developers prototyping biomedical, genomics, and proteomics applications.Manage technical and customer relationship between the Microsoft development team and the Fred Hutchinson proteomics researchers. Quickly learned genomic and proteomic biological theory, research and bioinformatics methods to understand workflows and data processing needs. Translated workflow requirements and customer feedback into prioritized specification suggestions for the development team. Created semantic schemas for ovarian cancer research datasets and imported many megabytes into database hosted on SQL Server. Used MS PowerShell and SSIS to transform flat files and load into SQL tables. Duplicated existing manual research workflows with semantic/SPARQL and SQL queries to find prospective ovarian cancer bio-markers.Transformed schema and imported numerous online genomic and biomedical research databases into the semantic database. Enriched research results by querying across experimental data linked with imported reference databases. Currently developing prototypes in F# (a functional programming language) using a Service Oriented Architecture to be forward compatible with Azure-hosted cloud-based service.Given only high level goals from Microsoft manager, independently create project plans, set priorities and manage to successful completion.

One of three technical leads in a 20-person team that developed a Windows-based application for cardiac stress testing. Application controlled external hardware, acquired and processed waveform data, and reported test results. Post-release, worked on a team of six developers that maintained the code base (currently over 1 million lines of code) and implemented new feature releases.Appointed to three-person team to architect new scalable Windows-based, three tier application to replace legacy embedded device. System met real-time constraints for data latency of less than 1 second from patient to screen on a 400 MHz Windows NT 4.0 system.Developed and unit tested multi-threaded ActiveX controls to display ECG waveforms on screen in real-time and print waveforms to laser printer, chart recorder, and PDF files. Also served as escalation engineer who promptly identified root causes and developed fixes for future releases.
