About John Karels

With more than 15 years of managerial/supervisory experience and 24 years in critical care, my attributes honed in leadership, communication, health promotion and comprehensive knowledge will be of benefit to your organization. I thoroughly enjoy collaborative teamwork having spent numerous hours working towards goal attainment, evidence-based practice and a culture of success. At the University of Colorado Hospital (UCHealth.org), Anschutz campus, I developed a reputation as a leader who delivers excellent comprehensive clinical care, educates a multitude of new and experienced staff and improves outcomes for patients who require Intensive Care. Clinically, I am proficient in managing diverse surgical and medical populations that require timely physiological assessments, comprehensive knowledge of life-sustaining equipment (e.g. ventilators, BiPAP/CPAP, pulmonary artery catheters, CCO, CRRT, IABPs, Centrimag, Heartmate, Heartware, Impella, along with VV and VA ECMO) and concurrent, efficient communication for timely clinical intervention. Most my career has been in leadership working to improve patient care. I've led a multitude of educational classes on in-hospital crisis response, ACLS, cardiac telemetry and post-operative care of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries. I demonstrate a track record for improving patient outcomes. Two notable achievements are the reduction of HAPI in the CT ICU patient population by 55% and a reduction of CLABSI by 77% in CT ICU and COVID ECMO patients. These were culture changing initiatives that saved lives.
