Spent a month in Kenya with other high school students in a small suburban town in central Kenya. Our goal for this trip was to engage in a new culture and spend time giving back to a poor area of the world. Taught English, Math, Science, and Physical Education to third grade Kenyan students at Gitinga Primary School for two weeks.Learned about the main cultural differences in Kenya by spending an hour every day talking to one of the old teachers at Gitinga Primary School.Helped build a new classroom for Gitinga Primary School by digging a foundation and installing a concrete base.Climbed Mount Kenya, the second tallest mountain on the African continent, and spent two nights camping on the mountain.Visited Samburu safari and saw wild elephants, giraffes, monkeys, lions, and gazelle.

Participated in a seven week long fundraising competition with two of my friends. We competed against different schools in the area for the title of “Students of the Year.”Developed a unique “flocking” campaign where community residents would pay to put a flock of plastic flamingos in their friends’ yard to spread awareness for our campaign. They would then pay to put it in another friends’ yard and so on. Created other unique ways to raise money such as halfcourt shots to win a pizza at halftime of our school’s varsity basketball games.Approached several well known companies in our area and asked for large corporate donations by delivering a presentation to high ranking executives in the company.Ended up raising $84,400 during the seven week period and winning the competition, our end amount was also the highest amount ever raised by students in our city.
