Dr. John K. Zao is the Co-founder, Chairman & CTO of FiduciaEdge Technologies in the Taiwan Hsinchu Science Park. FiduciaEdge dedicated to the development of Trusted Cloud Native Edge Computing software that can protect IoT data confidentiality and integrity from their sources. Before founding FiduciaEdge, Dr. Zao was the Founding Chair of IEEE standard working group on Edge/Fog Computing and Networking Architecture Framework and the Founding Vice-Chair of IEEE standard committee on Edge/Fog/Cloud Communications with IoT and Big Data. Since 2021, Dr. Zao also serves as the Professor of Practice in Information Engineering in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.Dr. Zao obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Harvard University in 1995 and elected a Senior Member of IEEE in 2001. He worked as a Senior Member of Technical Staff (1994–1999) and then a Principal Member of Technical Staff (1999–2002) in the Information Security Department of BBN Technologies, the company pioneered the ARPANet. While at BBN, he served as the principal investigator of several DARPA projects including Security Architecture for Global Mobile IP Support (MoIPS), Policy Based Security Management (PBSM), Policy Management for Defense Information Assurance Networks (Pledge) and Formal Information Assurance System Modeling (AVDA). After returning to Asia in 2004, Dr. Zao focuses his research on Pervasive Computing and Internet of Things (IoT). Dr. Zao’s work on IoT led to his involvement in Edge/Fog Computing. In spring 2016, he joined OpenFog Consortium and became a major contributor to the security section of the OpenFog Reference Architecture. He was elected a co-chair of their Security Working Group in the fall of 2016 and elected as the founding chair of the IEEE Standard Working Group and the fouding vice-chair of the IEEE Standard Committee in 2017. Under his leadership, the OpenFog Reference Architecture was successfully adopted by the IEEE Standard Association as the IEEE Standard 1934 in June 2018. Dr. Zao is also a serial entrepreneur. In 2016, he co-founded NGoggle Inc. in San Diego with Prof. Tzyy-Ping Jung and Prof. Felipe Medeiros at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). They developed an objective Glaucoma monitoring technique based on EEG emitted from a patient's visual cortex under visual stimulation. Their invention received $1.8M of grants from USNIH. In 2020, he co-founded FiduciaEdge Technologies in Hsinchu with Prof. Hank Huang of NCTU to develop Trusted Edge Computing software. FiduciaEdge closed their pre-A round fundraising in the summer of 2023.
