John recently joined Lightswitch, with extensive experience in architectural lighting design. Most recently, his work included hospitality projects, creative office spaces, life science power centers, sound stage/production campus complexes, and art installations. Based in Los Angeles for the past 25 years, his Lightswitch role is expanding the architectural lighting practice while continuing to serve his longstanding clients. John brings a wealth of creative and practical knowledge to any project team. Design innovation is part of his ethos and connecting with learners of all ages has been key in his career including teaching in the Environmental Design Program at Otis College of Art and Design. Professional and industry recognition includes several LEED Platinum projects. John believes that lighting is best when it reveals a compelling space.

Each spring taught Lighting and Luminaire Controls to mix of traditional students and extension learners.

We are creators who span technical knowledge and spatial senses. Our projects have been experienced all over the world. Those years of understanding inform each new project. The lexicon of light is ever changing, and our continued involvement informs and is influenced by that evolution. We find the best value proposition for the light – providing emphasis and movement. Our work bridges design, engineering, and the constructed environment. From the first sketch to the first day a client moves in we are there to speak for the space.

Design and manage projects from kick off to completion. Work with clients to create new opportunities for both of us. Coach younger staff on advanced skills.

Create value added lighting design and control engineering. Manage lead electricians on major projects while working with customers and general contractors on budget and schedule.

Starting with 6 sheet concept package, built a young staff and capabilities to create a 100 sheet lighting package for the exteriors of 60 buildings on 70 acres. Went to the field to supervise installation and final adjustment as part of 300 employee encampment on 2 billion dollar project.

Working in field, transformed lighting design intent into beautiful reality. Finding that perfect spot for the light or a new position to make the artwork and architecture be the best it can be.

Building on my work in the MFA program at UCSD I was able to design lighting for Robert Woodruff, Lisa Peterson and Tina Landau as my career started off.

From electrician to lighting designer, the rigors of summer stock formed an important part of my process and aesthetic. The extended family of this storied institution touches every aspect to entertainment today.
