After 25 years of helping businesses deal with the financial challenges of sponsoring a pension plan, I concluded that the last 15-20 years of my career would be more fulfilling if I focused on helping families deal with the financial challenges of raising a family, building wealth until retirement, and then navigating the puzzle of drawing down that wealth during retirement. After 7 years in the financial advisor industry, I left Edward Jones to start my own firm. I now work for myself as J.L. Dowell Financial in Monrovia, IN where my wife Mary and I have lived and raised our four kids over the last 19 years. I am excited to run my own business where I believe I can better balance my time between serving my clients, sharpening my skills at all things financial, and enjoying my personal time.At the age of 56 and a married father of four, I occasionally feel as much like the CFO of my household rather than a husband or a dad. I firmly believe that families can benefit simply by having a financial advisor on their team as they strive to make sound decisions with their money. Investors are often more comfortable teaming up with someone who has a similar background and who is in a similar stage of life, currently dealing with many of the same difficult decisions.
