I am a Senior Managing Engineer with YA Engineering Services, based in Philadelphia. An experienced testifying expert and peer-reviewed author, I have investigated over 1,000 forensic cases, with over 550 cases involving alleged product defects and 400+ cases involving premises liability and pedestrian falls. An ex-IndyCar mechanic & fabricator (prior to college), I ran my own product design engineering firm for 8 years after working 5 years designing machines, consumer products, and commercial products for several manufacturers. A 1993 graduate of Georgia Tech, I also taught product design materials and manufacturing processes in the College of Design for fifteen years. Board certified in forensic engineering through the National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE), I am a licensed Professional Engineer in numerous states. I am an ASE Certified Automobile Technician and have an Airman certificate for commercial drone operations from the Federal Aviation Administration. For over 17 years I have been heavily involved in standards development within ASTM International and several other organizations accredited by the American National Standards Institute. The primary author of ASTM E2713 (forensic engineering) and both F2948 and F3539 (pedestrian walkway safety), I am a recognized leader in standards development across multiple organizations, and I am the Chair of ASTM subcommittees on bathing surfaces and on walkway friction.As to pedestrian slip/fall investigations and friction testing, 14 years ago I became the de-facto manufacturer of Slip-Test walkway tribometers, and in 2012 I re-engineered the original Brungraber design into the research-proven Mark IIIB. In 2023 I became co-owner of Slip-Test LLC, and in addition to the Mark IIIB we are US distributor for KSS Pendulum tribometers. The tribometer I use depends upon the science and the "standards of care" for a particular walkway material.
