PhD molecular biologist and European/Chartered UK Patent Attorney working in biotechnology/life sciences, medical devices, chemistry and instrumentation. I have post-doctoral research experience from the University of Oxford, UK and R&D experience in a biotechnology company. I am qualified to act before the UK Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office and WIPO and have been in the patent profession since 2000.I have been involved in patenting a broad array of technologies in the life sciences/biotechnology sector. Fields in which I have worked include microbiology (eg. bioremediation, food processing technology, novel uses of biological organisms), molecular biology (eg. recombinant DNA technologies, diagnostics, nucleic acids, nucleic acid based technologies, personalised medicine, siRNA, vaccines, assays, therapeutic delivery, ADCs, CRISPR), and structural biology (eg. protein crystallisation). Particular areas of interest, in line with my technical background, are nucleic acid-based technologies and molecular diagnostics.I also have extensive experience handling mechanical subject matter, especially medical devices (eg. surgical instruments, surgical staplers, laparoscopic devices) and analytical instrumentation (eg. diagnostic analysers). I am experienced in drafting patent applications; prosecuting patent applications before the UKIPO and EPO; managing and implementing worldwide patent filing programmes; working with foreign patent associates; and EPO opposition/appeal proceedings. I also have experience in counselling clients (especially US clients) on how to best deal with the nuances of European IP practice, conducting freedom to operate searches and providing opinions on validity and infringement.
