Workforce Development program that involved developing a rover concept capable of traversing Martian terrain across the Vastitas Borealis given specific mission constraints, to obtain or verify relevant information pertaining to polar layer deposits on the planet.Worked alongside our team's lead systems engineer as one of two mechanical engineers to develop a set of six wheels incorporating heritage designs from the Opportunity and Perseverance rovers, in order to complete our expected mission distance of approximately 300 km over 438 sols. Considering the landscape that would need to be overcome, basic calculations and analysis had been conducted to select the proper material for both strength properties and weight efficiency, leading to a final selection of Aluminum 6061. Rover mobility would be powered by Maxon motors due to their experience in pervious Martian missions, in which models were chosen based on the projected torque values and inclines that may be encountered on the planet.Assisted our team's electrical engineer by communicating our science team and project managers to determine the power requirements of all science instrumentation and additional payload on the rover, to develop a power consumption over time graph throughout a 24 hour period, and entire mission lifespan. Using this information, we were able to design a solar array system that would allow our rover to appropriately power necessary components at a given time, to effectively accomplish mission objectives.As our team's safety officer, all required safety precautions during all production, relocation, and assembly operations had to be recorded to ensure the well-being of all personnel, which had been achieved through a tabulated format that described known potential hazards and mitigation procedures.
