About John Mennell

Give more than you take and don’t give up before the miracle happens!Literacy ends poverty by promoting reading and learning that builds self-reliance - it's the most powerful force for dignity, freedom, prosperity, and civility. With titles for every age, interest, professional aspiration, and language, magazines and comics are the most powerful literacy engines on the planet. At MagLiteracy.org, our mission and passion is to build an enormous literacy pipeline and to challenge the citizens of the world to fill it with new and recycled magazines for at-risk readers. BEmyCAUSE extended the idea as a marketplace for crowdsourcing delivery of any humanitarian good - food, clothes, books, tools, and personal and health care essentials. My professional career spans Capitol Hill, Wall Street, Main Street, and the Information Superhighway. I am a social entrepreneur recognized for innovation, leadership, and public service, and have extensive experience as an IT consultant in the financial services, telco, and human services.During a Cornell summer, I walked 20 miles each week to help teens start a community newspaper. After graduation and working as a congressional campaigner, and Capitol Hill staffer, I took a spirited run for the Maryland legislature. During the campaign I discovered empty food pantry shelves that led to organizing community and national hunger relief efforts. To raise awareness about U.S. hunger, I walked from D.C. to Boston - over 1 million steps - 20 miles a day, for 30 days. I left with 63 cents in my pocket. Somewhere in New England, I left a 63 cent tip on a free cup of coffee. I learned one of the most important lessons of my life - that no matter how far you want to go, no matter how daunting the trip, every journey starts with a single step and happens one step at a time.Every wave begins as a ripple, every forest a seed, every journey a step. My travels are about joining with others to share and leverage our talents and resources, to improve the opportunities for children and families, and to create massive social and community wealth.
