The column began in 1986 in the Spring Hope Enterprise. I also spent more than two decades as a weekly panelist on “N.C. Spin,” a discussion program airing first on commercial stations and then UNC-TV. Before that, I was a panelist on UNC-TV’s “North Carolina This Week.”I am the author of seven nonfiction books: “Catalyst: Jim Martin and the Rise of North Carolina Republicans” (2015); “Our Best Foot Forward: An Investment Plan for North Carolina's Economic Recovery” (2012); “Clear Creek & Rocky River: A North Carolina Family History” (2012); “To Know Such Liberty: An American Family History” (2011); “Selling the Dream: Why Advertising is Good Business” (2005); “Investor Politics” (2001); and “The Heroic Enterprise: Business and the Common Good” (1996). My latest published works — the historical-fantasy novels “Mountain Folk” (2021), “Forest Folk” (2022), and “Water Folk” (2024), plus the related novelettes “The Bard,” “The Pixie Light,” and “The Giant” — combine characters and events from American history with elements of traditional folklore and epic fantasy.
