The Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory at Colorado State University’s main research topic is fatigue, both peripheral and central. The novelty of this research is the use of noninvasive imaging techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The INP laboratory investigates fatigue in various populations including those with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Past project’s involved identifying glucose uptake heterogeneity between young and old adults and also of age- and task-associated differences in muscle blood flow during fatiguing contractions. I was responsible for quantifying glucose metabolism, muscle volumes, and blood flow for much of the Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) data for the research investigations. My involvement led to me being a co-author on a published manuscript, and on another pending publication. In addition to analyzing the PET/CT/MRI, I also engaged in discussions during lab meetings. As the lead undergraduate scientist in our lab I was also responsible for mentoring and delegating responsibilities to the other undergraduate students. I also investigated glucose metabolism and bone mineral density in the bones of persons with MS. I presented these findings at the Rocky Mountain American College of Sports Medicine conference in 2014 as well as the National American Sports Medicine conference in San Diego.Published Manuscript:Rudroff T, Kindred JH, Benson J-M, Tracy BL and Kalliokoski KK (2014). I was a teaching assistant under Dr.Rudroff for the class Neuromuscular Aspects of Human Movement. I provided teaching support, improved my ability to act as a peer educator, learned how to grade assignments, wrote exam/quiz questions, and enhanced my communication skills.I also lead a demonstration on surface electromyography (EMG) in front of the class. This demonstration took place in our research lab and I explained every facet of the demonstration from the concepts of EMG signaling to coordination of student participation.

I was hired as an undergraduate research intern in Dr.Michael Tamkun’s Integrative Neuroscience laboratory to help with summer research endeavors. During my time in the laboratory I learned many genetic and microbiology research techniques including; DNA isolation from bacterial cultures, plasmid construct design, polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, transforming bacteria, transfecting cells, restriction digestion, and TIRF microscopy. The research focuses on an understanding of ion channels and their interactions with one another.
