An industrious recruiter might well scour even the wilds of Maine to find a Swiss Army Knife communicator. Or so I’m hoping.What is a Swiss Army Knife communicator? I’d like to think it’s someone with a CV like mine. I’ve written Special Order speeches for members of Congress; I've managed a crisis communications plan for key U.S. nuclear power officials touring the devastated Fukushima Daiichi plant in 2013.At the request of White House counsel I developed talking points for use in interviews with national media in the nomination campaigns of two U.S. Supreme Court Justices.I’ve led a first-of-its-kind multi-media/digital content development team overseas for the Washington Capitals.I started a hockey blog that was awarded NHL press credentials from 2006-2010.My first appearance on national television as a spokesman took place in 2004.And so what am I doing today in Maine, far away from Washington, after spending 20 years in D.C. tethered to my phone 24/7/365 while defending industries, leading crisis response teams, and resurrecting badly damaged brands? Resetting. Re-prioritizing. Pivoting. In D.C. I fell into a trap as so many others have — sharpening language for innumerable legislative battles (and imagining that being a really big deal), chasing titles and status and screen time on C-SPAN, and losing sight of what matters more to me. I worked with incredible talents, but I learned too much about how Washington works, and that saddened and depressed me. I needed so much more from life than what Capitol Hill confrontations provided. In Maine I believe I’ve found a home for living a balanced life. In Maine I firepit in L.L. Bean flannel shirts with new friends, earn wonderful weekend hamstring soreness playing pond hockey, and discover the wonders of my new home by groomed snowmobile trail. I am, though, missing one last memorable communications mission. I want to marshall 20-plus years’ worth of high-stakes communications experience and help a small or medium sized company in or near my new home build out its brand and grow its revenues, with great storytelling. I need a small team of visual arts gurus and a social media maven; I’ll devise the vision and the strategy. I’ll manage the messages and their delivery. I’ll identify and train the voices internally who’ll help tell our story.When a business or organization commits to innovative, difference-making communication it necessarily commits to organizational effectiveness. I’d love to buy you a Maine craft beer and share my successes achieving both.
