About John Smithers

One of the greatest compliments I received was, "You don't know how hard it was to find you." They were talking about my apparently unique combination of skills and experience.I've never had a job that provided me with everything needed to complete the task at hand: It's a good thing I enjoy puzzles. While it's always better to have the right tool for the job, sometimes I just have to make my own -- whether it be a fixture, cable, the right combination of components, or something else. I enjoy a challenge. I've even had to come up with ways to make test systems work outside their original specifications. I listen and observe the problem my team members are having, ask questions, learn, and ask them, "How about this?" Quite often it leads to a solution. While my education and early experience was as an electronics technician, I almost always said "yes" when asked would or could I do or take on something outside my training. I enjoy working with my hands and my head. This meant that, beyond the skills I demonstrated and tools I used in electronics (test and measurement equipment, hand tools, and soldering tools), I also took on the mechanical side of things, assembling and disassembling products, test systems, and labs. I learned to use mechanics tools and some shop and fabrication equipment (drill presses, band saws, sheet metal breaks). I've even been known to use a broom and vacuum cleaner on occasion... I've also enjoyed taking the data logs from the automated testing of devices over thousands of hours and provided data analysis. I prefer working in an engineering environment. Many times, some of the testing has been automated. I have, when it was permitted, gone into the code, figured out what it was doing (with and without assistance), and modified it as needed. I also enjoy documenting tests, test results, failures, and solutions with words and photos. I've worked as small as 0201 and fine pitched surface mount devices, replacing and troubleshooting at system, board, and component level). I've isolated problems to inner board layers. I've worked as big as a warehouse-based farm consisting of warehouse shelves and specialized lighting and power. This entailed working with scissor lifts, safety harnesses, and crawling over shelves as high as, if memory serves, 40 feet.

Listed skills include Troubleshooting, Testing, Manufacturing, Test Equipment, and 46 others.
