A return to a strategy and technology role

During this role with Homeserve I was given the opportunity to take on operational responsibilities as well as retaining the remit for the enterprise architecture. Managing a range of teams, I developed their respective capabilities by enabling better local decision-making and by providing a strategic context within which they could act.

Building on my previous role as Systems' Architect I took on a group-wide remit to build a brand-new CTO function. The road was sometimes rocky but during my tenure I proved the value of strategic technology thinking and materially increased the maturity of the IS team.

Lead architect on a business transformation programme with a group-wide remit. The role involved providing thought-leadership to allow for the creation of a consolidated technology platform, based on service-oriented principles, to provide the flexibility enabling new routes to market. This appointment required me to establish credentials within the IT function and across the wider business in order to sell the vision to board-level stakeholders. Drawing on my extensive background in enterprise architecture I helped to lead a team of domain experts in defining a technical solution that aligned with an emerging business model.

Asked to form a new practice specialising in service-oriented architecture. Responsible for defining the offering, recruiting appropriately and taking to market. Extensive dealings with customers and vendors in designing best-of-breed solutions for a diverse range of domains whilst managing an argument of senior architects. Strong understanding and practical experience of governance, business process management and ESB-driven integration.

During this time I was involved in, and often led, the transition of Marsh’s technology framework to a modern web-centric service-oriented architecture based on the IBM WebSphere stack. As a founding member of the Architecture and Strategy department I drove all aspects of the creation of the enterprise architecture. This was facilitated through my long-standing presence on the Global and Regional Architecture Boards, the key technical governance structure at Marsh.

-Brought in as the lead developer / architect on a failing flagship Government Pathfinder project (J2EE)-Turned it around and the resulting architectural definition was put forward as an example of best practice for local and national Government projects-Solution was delivered under-budget and ahead of schedule

-Lead developer (J2EE) at ship-broking ASP start-up-Defined technical architecture including scalability, performance, robustness, resilience, security, source configuration management, build & release and internationalization-Substantial coding responsibilities for EJBs using GoF patterns in a J2EE context-Instrumental in introducing Struts MVC framework-Authority on development methodology (Agile with Unified Process framework)-Led the adoption of Rational CASE tools and the use of UML

-Founding member of technical team at a software start-up-Developed product vision, technical architecture, recruited and managed technical team of 10-Led this group through the analysis, design and delivery of the first two production releases-Technical Authority on all aspects of product-Drove use case analysis for requirements definition-Extensive coding responsibilities (J2SE / EE)-Significant, direct involvement in Client and Investor relations
