John Mitchell is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) subject matter expert and techno-economic specialist having held multiple leadership roles in the BESS industry since 2014. John has experience contracting multiple GWh of BESS and hybrid energy projects throughout the US and Europe, across both turn-key and software only solution offerings. John is currently responsible for accelerating the adoption of energy storage by improving project profitability through Teslas advanced optimization products. John possesses a deep understanding of all technical and commercial aspects of energy storage projects, the key drivers and sensitivities throughout the project development life cycle, and the ability to identify and communicate the solutions required to deliver a successful project. John specializes in North American ISO territory market dynamics (ERCOT, CAISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, PJM) but has a broad understanding of the fundamental value BESS deployment brings on a macro and site level globally having developed BESS value proposition from the early stages the industry. After beginning his career in investment banking in 2014, John spent 5 years as the top sales engineer at energy storage integrator Younicos (which became Aggreko Microgrid & Storage Solutions in 2018). During this period John was the lead sales engineer from origination to contract close on 8 battery energy storage projects totaling over $20m, and was the internal champion for all things commercial modeling, sales strategy, customer education, and generally doing whatever it took to make projects happen in the early days of energy storage. Originally from Cork, Ireland. John received his master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Finance from UCD Smurfit Graduate Business School, Dublin in 2014, and his Bachelor of Engineering (Energy Systems) from NUI Galway in 2013. His final year thesis focused on the development of solar + storage microgrids for developing communities in Africa.🇮🇪
