At a young age, my dad brought home a computer that came with a programming book. He looked at me and said: "Have fun and learn something!" I took that advice and never looked back. Now I am teaching my own son that while playing video games is fun, creating them can be even more fun. On its worst days, programming is one of the most frustratingly complex and mentally draining professions, but even on those days, I would never trade it for anything (except maybe flying around in a small airplane). The sense of satisfaction you get when you see something you wrote adding value to someone else’s life and meeting a need is not easily described.Over the years I have had the privilege to work with a number of different technologies and systems. While I have certainly picked a few core technologies that I gravitate towards, as a generalist, my approach is to keep learning, keep applying, and keep challenging myself to be better than I was yesterday. That same approach can be applied to whatever tech stack is required to fulfill a customer’s need. I have enjoyed this process solo (I was a remote employee since WAYYYY before the pandemic), but I also enjoy pouring into others and working as a team.
