Johnny has led A&DS work with Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland to establish the Place Standard as a national tool to support place-based design approaches and participation in the creation of healthy neighbourhoods. Currently enabling neighbourhood scale collaborative design and planning work in support of Local Authority and housing industry initiatives. Other focus of current work is around Town Centre Living, Housing to 2040, Green Recovery, 20 Minute Neighbourhoods and Designing Streets policy agendas. Johnny has provided strategic Design and Planning Advice to Local Authorities on Major Housing and Mixed Use Development since 2012, including the engagement of A&DS expert Design Forum Panel. Earlier masterplanning work in practice as Cadell ² and AREA included the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiatives at Whitecross 2008, Scotland’s National Housing Exhibition at Balvonie Braes in Inverness in 2010. Earlier award winning masterplanning work included Drum, Bo’ness, Carron Den, Stonehaven and Bellfield Dyke, Kirknewton, informing national PAN guidance on urban design, placemaking, and masterplanning. As director of Edward Cullinan Architects from 1988-2000 he was project architect for work in London, Cambridge and Scotland including visitor centres, city centre offices, housing, schools, a university faculty building, community hospital, health centre and a theatre. He has taught architecture at University of Edinburgh and was an External examiner at University of Cambridge from 2017-19.
