Student physiotherapist with the acute stroke team. Handled a caseload of acute strokes, brain injuries, haematomas and occasional medical patients on surge wards. The role involved detailed subjective and objective assessments including presenting complaints, history of PC, past medical history, social history, drug history; assessment of ROM, strength, tone, sensation, co-ordination, vision, balance and mobility. Patients were led from their initial stages through rehabilitation on the ward to improve their function based on individual deficits then discharged to rehab hospitals or home with community rehab input. This role involved lots of communication and liaison with the wider MDT including OT, nursing staff, medics and speech and language therapists. Progression of mobility was the primary goal measured through meeting mobility milestones.

Forth Valley Royal Hospital

Student physiotherapist with the Fastrack team at the front door.Our role involved managing a caseload of patients in the Acute Assessment and Clinical Assessment units surrounding A&E. Assessments included a detailed subjective, comprehensive frailty assessment (CFA) and mobility assessment with the goal of ascertaining patient needs, current level, distance from baseline with a primary role of the team being reducing admissions to inpatient wards. We also monitored A&E admissions and carried out rapid assessments to determine whether patients were at their functional baseline and safe to return home as the medics deemed them medically fit. The job involved liaison with medical staff, occupational therapy, frailty team and the discharge hub. Understanding discharge pathways and contacting community services such as ICASS, downstream beds and social services was also an important aspect of the role.

Student physiotherapist with the outpatient MSK team.The role involved thorough subjective and objective assessments in patients from ~6 months to 16 years old. Subjective assessments included presenting complaints (PC), history of PC, nature of PC, special questions/red flags, family history of autoimmune, inflammatory or connective tissue disorders, birth history and social history. Objective assessments included head to toe ROM, strength and neurological testing, special tests, normal variants, proprioception/balance and functional tasks. Patient and parent education played a huge role as well as goal planning and rehabilitation.

Student placement within the pulmonary rehabilitation team in Edinburgh, working between Leith Community Treatment Centre and Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre. This role involved taking detailed patient subjective assessments as well as objective assessments including inhaler technique and sub maximal fitness tests with concurrent SpO2 monitoring. Clinical reasoning helped us determine whether patients were eligible and capable of taking part in 6 weeks of pulmonary rehabilitation. Exercise classes were held 3 times per week and my role involved organising and leading the class, as well as providing 30 minutes of education to patients before they exercised. Education included discussions around COPD, breathing techniques, ACBT, clearance techniques and anxiety.

Queen Margaret Hospital

Student placement within the Whitefield ARC Physiotherapy team. My role involved a thorough subjective and social history followed by functional head-toe, balance and frailty assessments. Patients were assessed with a multi-disciplinary approach from the team involving co-ordination with the medical staff (doctors and nurses), occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Provided education and advice regarding the importance of health, wellbeing and physical activity while increasing awareness around the current physical activity guidelines in the UK. Patients returned for review assessments and guided rehabilitation / strength and conditioning sessions. Onward referral to community physiotherapy and exercise classes on discharge allowed continuity of care.
