Operation Safe Haven: Replacement housing for tent citiesAfter the development of the Casa Nuevo Project (below), USI was challenged to create a similar project, but for low to no income housing. The idea was to utilize readymade, commercially available “housing” that could be modified to provide a bathroom, kitchen, and sleeping area that included electricity. With small communities where families can live, feel safe and protected, people can now rise above the ashes of their circumstances with dignity. There is a house that they can call home and reference in job applications. A place where children can feel safe, learn and grow up with the hope of something more. A central community gathering place situated above the utility systems would serve as places of learning and even business. Plans and cost estimates were prepared for private and government investors.

Casa Nuevo: Affordable housing for lower-middle-income families while providing sustainable and renewable utilities that can be afforded.After seeing a call by the Dominican Republic government for foreign investment into housing projects for lower-middle-income families, USI worked with a local DR contractor to design and prepare cost estimates for a project to build such housing. Called Casa Nuevo or “New House”, USI designed a gated community to include primary power, water, and sewer treatment. The concept of district cooling was employed as well as trash remediation to provide a full housing solution that was not subject to brownouts that the rest of the island was experiencing. Also, the concept of an HOA was employed to help manage the community as well as to sell back electricity onto the grid, thus creating a small income for the HOA that reduced their overall cost of living while producing an ongoing revenue stream for the developer. The development came with a central meeting place for families to hold community meetings, religious meetings, and a place for children to play.

Operation More Power: Sustainable and Renewable Energy and Water ConsultingUSI went to Grenada to meet with Grenada’s power generating company and presented on renewable energy options available to them. As a result, USI developed a phased plan to start implementing some of these options and slowly reduce its reliance on diesel fuel dependence.

As a senior mechanical engineer and project manager, at PSE I have had the opportunity of working on many diverse projects including power plant upgrades, mining projects, minerals concentrator plants, Trona and Phosphate mines, chemical and petrochemical plants. Power plant projects have included natural gas and coal plants from 20 megawatts to 900 megawatts. Extensive work in the chemical industry including both greenfield and existing plant upgrades with extensive experience in unsnarling complexly layered or ancient piping, processing, and steam systems. I have a knack for helping plant engineers and operators figure out or understand what is actually happening in their plants and a talent for finding the simple and obvious solutions that help things run much better. I also have a good amount of experience in material handling including conveyors, slurry transfer systems and gas and liquid transfer over extended distances. Because I love engineering, love old and new plants, understand and enjoy the challenges of manufacturing and very much enjoy working with people, most people enjoy having me join their team to help them solve their production facility problems and challenges and upgrades.

Worked with the FLSmidth Plant Engineering Team on several projects including the multi-hundred million Kazakhymns Copper Concentrator located in Bozshakol Kazakhstan. As lead project engineer I worked directly with the project manager to coordinate the work of the various engineering disciplines and product vendors in the mission of getting the plant engineering complete and deliverable s approved and all product ordered so the plant could be built.

After years of interest in renewable energy and electrolysis, the concept of the Ocean Energy Capture and Storage emerged. MAETEC LLC was formed as a way to further develop the technology and move it forward. The tremendous support from local colleges, universities, friends, and family helped developed the technology until lake trials had shown that the concepts work. The end goal for the development of the technology was so that it could be used to overcome poverty in island nations and coastal areas in developing or underserved areas. As Founder and Technology Director the work included planning and directing engineering design, research studies, and technology tests including large "wind" tunnel and lake trial testing. It also included meeting with government officials including ministries of energy, environment, and even prime ministers of various island countries to learn about their energy needs and ways that technology could support their struggling economies. It also involved meeting with university and college researchers and program directors to gain their support in various research projects as well. The overall visioning of how to develop the technology and the coordination and motivation of a staff of engineers, technicians, and student supports was a key part of the work.Electrolysis efficiency records in making hydrogen and oxygen from seawater, marine wind turbine technology, efficiency leaps, and remarkable technology development has been part of this work at both MAETEC LLC and the Caribbean Pacific Foundation. Operation Wind: Development of pilot site to deploy floating wind turbine prototypeMAETEC worked with the only private power producer in the Bahama Islands to lay the groundwork for a pilot test site for MAETEC’s floating wind turbine, the OECS, or Ocean Energy Capture System. Located off the Northern tip of Eleuthera, we negotiated an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) for the operations and payments of the floating wind turbine. We also worked on the supply chain model that would be used to ship the parts, build the buoy, and deploy the turbine.

Designed and oversaw the manufacturing of computer controlled manufacturing equipment. Designed and managed the set up and commissioning of 4 major manufacturing facilities and more than 13 small manufacturing or fabrication shops in the US and Canada. Worked extensively with plastic extrusions including vinyl fence. Designed and brought to manufacturing the telescoping frame man door used then used extensively in western coal mines. Designed and developed multiple product lines and oversaw them manufactured as a sub contract manufacturer for Tensar Poly technologies with product distribution in several large big box stores including Builders Square, Home Depo and Heckengers, and in one six week period managed the production and shipping of more than 28,000 product boxes. Designed and brought to market through manufacturing a diverse line of products including college dorm furniture, hinges, brackets,latches, and stiffeners for the vinyl fence industry as well as the design of manufacturing equipment and cells for companies like Allside, Heritage Plastic and Daymond Building products. Over a ten year period was instrumental in helping the CI LLC grow in revenue by more than 20 times..

Founded and grew IED to serve local companies interested in having their blueprints and drawings done in a CAD model. Grew and developed the business from simply redrawing hand drawings in CAD to actually designing computer-controlled manufacturing equipment. Saw the company through its merger with the IED's largest customer to support a line of computer control manufacturing equipment they were bringing to market.
