Johnny lives and breathes branding. He worked 30 years for Bernstein-Rein Advertising, with titles that included Art Director, Creative Director, Director of Creative Services, Director of Operations and Head Window Washer. He then created and ran Fire Engine Studio as a spin-off boutique.He may best be known for his work on two famous icons: Smiley and Walmart. He introduced the concept to Walmart for what was to be a two-year Rollback advertising campaign that, as we know, became a ten-year rebranding for the retail giant and one of the most recognizable branding concepts in recent retail history. By the end of its run, Smiley was on the backs of more than 1.5 million associates, translated into more than 30 different languages, and had become a synonymous mascot for the company. It even was the subject matter of an unauthorized parody in a marketing poster for an anti-Walmart documentary. Now that’s flattery.Johnny also coined the phrase “Don’t give fleas a biting chance” for Bayer and worked with the company on packaging, print and television for the rollout of their new product Advantage, a flea control for dogs and cats. To his knowledge, no parodies were made.Brand experience includes Walmart, McDonald’s, Bayer, Thrifty Car Rental, USAA, Blockbuster Video, H&R Block, Sprint, Black & Veatch, Russell Stover & Whitmans Candies, Christopher Elbow Chocolates, Missouri Lottery, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Beauty Brands, UMKC, JCCC and The University of Oklahoma, to name a few.Johnny’s leadership skills in marketing strategy,design and execution include creative direction, process management, relationship management, planning, recruiting, team-building, business development, procurement and leadership.A graduate of The University of Oklahoma, Johnny is a recent inductee into the OU Student Publications Hall of Fame.
