John has more than 20 years of experience in law enforcement (including 10+ years at the managerial level) specializing in high technology crimes investigations and data protection. As head of the NYPD's Computer Crimes Squad, Lt Commander of Detectives (ret), John Otero led and managed one of the largest cyber crime units in the country. He possessed top-secret clearance from the F.B.I. and has collaborated with many federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to solve cyber crimes. During his tenure, he and his teams uncovered a wide range of cyber crime activities including: theft of intellectual property, corporate espionage, network intrusions, identity theft, child pornography, arson, rape, homicides, and missing persons. While in the NYPD, he testified at numerous civil and criminal court proceedings on behalf of the state and, upon retirement, he investigated and testified in corporate cases. He served as a keynote speaker at numerous universities, banks, Fortune 500 companies, and technology conferences and was a subject matter expert for books, magazines, and on national television interviews. He and his teams provided cyber crime awareness training to thousands of people including other police and government agencies, schools, corporations, and other venues on the subject of high-tech crimes prevention, net security, and due diligence. He has been retained as a cyber security subject matter expert by several movie and television show executives to enhance the accuracy and realism of their actor's technical dialogue. He has contributed to several federal work groups in developing guides for investigating cyber crimes including NIST and the National White Collar Crime Center. John has assisted several colleges/universities with the development of their cyber security programs and is currently an Associate Professor in St John’s University Cyber Security bachelor’s degree program.
