Environmental Specialist
As an Environmental Specialist at the Florida Department of Health, Environmental Health division; I dealt with the design and installation of septic systems from the permitting stage through the installation and final approval of the systems. The job consisted of understanding how to read soils for pertinent information such as seasonal high-water tables and different soil types, reading and understanding the State, County, and city codes for how a system can be designed and how to best protect the water resources of the areas. Any complaints from citizens about possible health and environmental hazards are inspected and remediation is attempted on valid complaints. I reviewed any permits that come through and ensured they were properly filled out and all code requirements were met. Finally, I worked to educate contractors and the public at large about how septic systems work, why we permit them as we do, and best practices in the maintenance and use of them in their homes.
