I’ve thrown off the doctor’s white coat of 35 years and put on a brown sport coat. Out of the hospital and onto the street. What has not changed is a my focus on caring for the sick, lessening their suffering, and eliminating disease. In my case, change brings the opportunity to take all of us out of harm’s way from cancer, a potential life-ending disease. In the US cancer touches one out of four individuals in their lifetimes. One American dies from some form of cancer every 45 seconds.I spent two decades of my career focused on clinical research in cancer immunotherapy. I built labs, designed and led patient clinical trials, hired PhDs, wrote clinical protocols, submitted FDA applications and participated in FDA inspections, published outcomes of work, and collaborated with the National Cancer Institute for information, staff education, and standards of care and research. My work continues today in a slightly different direction. Now retired from active practice, I established a nonprofit 501c.3 foundation in 2011 to continue moving cancer immunotherapy ahead as a significant player in treating the disease. In 2013, Science magazine and American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2015 named cancer immunotherapy “Breakthrough of the Year.” For melanoma, leukemia and lymphoma, striking long-term results have been achieved, and even a few cures. John P. Hanson Cancer Research Foundation Inc. aims to continue this progress through research into cancer immunotherapy. In 2014, the Foundation aligned with the internationally recognized Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwester University at the Feinberg School of Medicine. A funded 3 year fellowship for translational research in immumo-oncology is established. This is the moment of opportunity. Either in sport coat or white coat, this doctor looks to cure cancer, eliminate it, end it. Needed now are collaborators with time talent and treasure. This project needs you.
