Professor John Prins is an active clinician-scientist, a respected thought leader in diabetes and endocrinology in Australia, and has wide experience on grant review and advisory committees for NHMRC, non-government organisations and industry.Professor Prins joined Health Translation Queensland as Executive Director in January 2023. Health Translation Queensland is a partnership organisation that aims to address the barriers to the translation of medical research into Queensland’s healthcare system.He also maintains part-time clinical, research and corporate roles across the Academic, Health and Pharmaceutical sectors and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and of the Australasian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. Professor Prins has significant commercialisation experience, holds a number of international patents, and was instrumental in the formation of two spinout biotech companies, Adipogen Pty Ltd and Jetra Pharmaceuticals. He led the successful bid to establish the Australian Clinical Entrepeneurs Program, through the University of Melbourne and University of Western Australia.

In 2012 Queensland Health handed responsibility of health care to Hospital and Health Services. I was recruited to be a foundation Director of the Metro South Hospital and Health Service (HHS) that manages the delivery of health care to the “Metro South” geographical region in the South of Brisbane (population 1.2 million). The HHS has a budget of ~$2.7b pa, employs over 13,000 staff, and provides a full range of health care from community-based to quaternary referral and State-wide services. In addition to my Director role, I chair the Safety and Quality Subcommittee, which oversees clinical governance and quality of delivered healthcare. Furthermore, the Committee manages compliance with State and Federal legislation, and takes responsibility for the HHS preparation for regular external accreditation processes. I am also a member of the Executive committee and, for 4 years, was a member of the Audit & Risk and Finance Committees. Additionally, I lead strategy development for the HHS. In 2017 I was appointed Deputy Chair of the Board.

I was responsible for the strategic direction and management of the Institute and its personnel. In addition to its basic laboratory facilities, the Institute coordinates the research in all Mater Group hospitals, totalling ~ 800 beds. In 2013 I led the then independent Institute to form an alliance with UQ, establishing MRI-UQ, with great success. In 2017 the MRI-UQ contributed 2.5% of UQ’s overall academic activity (as measured by HERDC).
