Health Translation Queensland (HTQ) brings together 13 of Queensland’s major research institutes and health services. HTQ helps to solve some of Queensland’s most pressing health challenges by supporting well-evidenced research to be more quickly and efficiently translated into clinical practice.At HTQ, I am seeking to improve health outcomes for Queenslanders by improving communication, collaboration, and efficiencies across the broader healthcare and medical research sectors: from discovery science right through to patient care in regional and rural areas.

In 2012 Queensland Health handed responsibility of health care to Hospital and Health Services. I was recruited to be a foundation Director of the Metro South Hospital and Health Service (HHS) that manages the delivery of health care to the “Metro South” geographical region in the South of Brisbane (population 1.2 million). The HHS has a budget of ~$2.7b pa, employs over 13,000 staff, and provides a full range of health care from community-based to quaternary referral and State-wide services. In addition to my Director role, I chair the Safety and Quality Subcommittee, which oversees clinical governance and quality of delivered healthcare. Furthermore, the Committee manages compliance with State and Federal legislation, and takes responsibility for the HHS preparation for regular external accreditation processes. I am also a member of the Executive committee and, for 4 years, was a member of the Audit & Risk and Finance Committees. Additionally, I lead strategy development for the HHS. In 2017 I was appointed Deputy Chair of the Board.

As Acting GCEO I held responsibility for strategy, Partner (including Governments) management, operations, and performance of the Mater Group, which comprised -• Mater Health ($900m, 1000 beds, 8,000 staff)• Mater Education Limited ($5m, 50 staff)• Mater Foundation ($85m, 120 staff)• Mater Research ($35m, 400 staff)I reported to the Mater Misericordiae Board, and also held non-executive Director positions on the Boards of Mater Education, Mater Research and the Mater Foundation (there is no separate Mater Health Board). My direct reports included the 14-member Group Executive (including Chief Executives of the four subsidiary companies) and Directors of Human Resources and Shared Services.

In 2015 the Board of the Mater Hospitals in Brisbane endorsed a change in strategic direction from “Mater Health” to “Mater Health, Education and Research”. I was heavily involved in the development of this strategy and in the significant reorganisation of the entire campus into five clinical, multidisciplinary streams. A new Executive, on which I am the Research representative, was formed in 2016 to manage the $1.0b, 8,000 FTE campus. I was also a member of the Mater Clinical Council (the executive group for Mater Health) and I chaired the Mater Group ICT Strategy and Governance Committee.

This was a personal Chair, with responsibility for provision of teaching and assessment and undertaking research in Endocrinology. Teaching included bed-side clinical coaching, small-group tutorials/PBL and large group formal lectures for MD and BSc students.

This was a 0.2 FTE clinical position with the Princess Alexandra Hospital, providing tertiary and quaternary inpatient and outpatient services, teaching, and training in Diabetes and Endocrinology. Training and supervision components of the role include formal supervision of Endocrinology Advanced Trainees (for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians), local and international Research Fellows and of graduate (mostly M.D.) and postgraduate students.

As University Institute Director I had dual reporting to the Provost and the Executive Dean of Medicine. As CEO I reported to the MMRI Ltd Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Jim Walker AM. I was responsible for the strategic direction and management of the Institute and its personnel. In addition to its basic laboratory facilities, the Institute coordinates the research in all Mater Group hospitals, totalling ~ 800 beds. In 2013 I led the then independent Institute to form an alliance with UQ, establishing MRI-UQ, with great success. In 2017 the MRI-UQ contributed 2.5% of UQ’s overall academic activity (as measured by HERDC).
