Which led to my main project with the Secretary of Defense on the Pentagon's efforts to improve government technology and rebuild the relationship between the public and private innovation sectors (like Silicon Valley). Which led to co-founding the Defense Innovation Unit. The initial internally-developed model was dead on arrival in the first few months, so the White House's CTO and I stepped in to "kill it in the crib" and relaunch with a new model, where I wrote the initial 'business plan,' recruited and trained the new leadership, evangelized to the press, congress, startup world, and so on.DIU (launched as DIUx) is headquartered in Silicon Valley as the liaison between the military and companies/innovators not in the traditional military industrial complex. For example, DIU rapidly works with startups by granting non-dilutive contracts on simple, commercial terms within two months from first meet to cash in bank — rather unprecedented in gov land.
