On 9/9/11 I had a horse accident that put me in the hospital for almost two years and required 25 surgeries and procedures. I was told the accident wasn't survivable by multiple doctors. God showed up at the accident, spoke to me, and let me know he would heal me. This experience caused me to re-examine everything about my life, who I was and what I stood for. The Faith and Freedom Coalition was founded after a conversation amongst a group of my friends who were leading companies about what we can do to affect policy and politics in a positive way. Our goal was to restore America's greatness and founding principles using what we have learned in business. When I was invited to the Make A Wish ball as a guest I had no idea what was in store for me. I heard the story of a family whose son had been taken from a rare form of cancer when he was 16. As they shared how powerful the week they had was for them I was in tears.It was a time of healing and where the family was able to hit the pause button and reconnect after years of crazy schedules and emotional turmoil. What a gift it was to them. The hope that a wish to a child with a life-threatening illness is beyond measure and I knew that I had to be a part of this great organization. If you are not familiar with Make A Wish I would highly encourage you to attend an event or get involved. It has been a huge blessing to my wife and our family and the families we had the honor to serve.

I founded Colorado Rough Riders to engage and educate CEO's and business leaders on public policy issues that affect Colorado. We started with a small meeting at the University Club here in Denver and quickly grew to over 400 members.

After 13 interviews over six months Bernstein offered me a job. Yes, that was an extensive process! Making the pivot from technology to becoming a financial consultant was a big decision. After years of technology startups, and 80 hour weeks, me and my family needed a change of pace and it was one of the best decisions I have made.Working with the leading thought leaders in finance and the capital markets as well as some of the most successful leaders and business owners was an absolute joy. Through great mentorship, my practice grew beyond any of my expectations and today the clients that I worked with are still close friends!

After the dot com crash wiped out Synera I was introduced to John Hanlon at EMC who was the Division manager for Networked Attached Storage (NAS) overlay sales and became a powerful mentor in my life. EMC had just acquired Clarion and decided to launch a new division - Commercial. This new divisions charter was to sell to companies with less than a billion in revenue which EMC had never focused on before. John Hanlon was named the new Commercial Division manager and he asked me to lead the Midwest district. We were basically creating a startup inside of a Fortune 100 company. How awesome is that! I was asked to hire sales, pre- sales engineers, marketing, and project maangement. The district I led had a total of $1.4 million in sales the 12 months prior to me taking over. The team we assembled had an incredible culture of always helping each other out and holding each other accountable. After two and a half years we hit $32 million in sales in one quarter and kept going. This was an incredible experience for me as a leader and many of the experiences, both good and bad, at EMC is what allows me to serve leaders today as a coach.

While at a networking meeting I meet the CEO of newly founded Synera Systems. He asked me what I knew about data mining and business intelligence and the answer was - zip, nada... The CEO, Tim Bates, saw something in me that I didn't see in myself and asked me to interview as the VP of sales and operations for North America. Man did I feel like I out kicked my coverage!Fun story - The angel investor that seeded Synera was from Barcelona Spain and they asked me to fly over and meet him. Tough duty I know :-) I landed on a Sunday, toured this magnificent city and then set my alarm for 0630 on Monday morning and was at the office at 0700. Had to make a good impression right... Little did I know that no one shows up for work in Barcelona until 9 am and the doors on the building were locked. The family-focused culture in Spain is awesome and something we need more of here in the states.Synera was an incredible ride as we worked with Global 2000 clients and grew the business to over a million per month in sales. The team was rocking and we had been brought into the Deloitte Center for Excellence through our work with one of their clients. The future was blazing bright until the dot-com crash hit and we all had to move on. I have to admit, that was a hard pill to swallow after everyone on the team had virtually worked 6-7 days a week for years. What I learned from that experience is that all things work together for good depending on how you view life!

Who can forget when TopGun came out in the spring of 1986? For me watching the movie I had mixed emotions: total excitement and dread. I was a sophomore in college in the Navy ROTC program at RPI and my dream since I was a kid was to become a fighter pilot! Watching TopGun I knew two things. This is what I HAD to do and that everyone with a pulse would be applying to Navy flight school. I later heard that for every 10,000 people that applied to enter flight school at that time only one person would end up in the cockpit of an F-14 or F-18. My orders came in and they were to report to NAS Pensacola, FL to start flight training in August of 1988. On the way down my Dad gave me some of the best advice of my life (it still guides me today). That was to find the one student in the Naval Aviation training command who is crushing it, buy him a beer and ask him what he is doing. That person was John Foster and he freely shared how he trained, prepared and developed the mindset that set him apart. I made the decision to do what John was doing and got the same results and graduated number one in my class and was able to choose to fly the F-14 out of NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA. The experiences and stories of my time flying the Tomcat off of aircraft carriers, combat sorties in Iraq, and the time leading incredible men of character could fill a book. This was one of the most exciting times of my life. My respect for the men and women who serve this country in uniform is deep and profound. My first 23 months in my fleet squadron I was deployed 19 months due to Desert Storm and Operation Southern watch and my wife and the families of my sailors were our bedrock.
