John was a qualified throttleman, roaming electrician, electrical systems operator, and load dispatcher for the nuclear power plant. As throttleman he controlled one of the the main engines which used steam turbines to provide the ship's propulsion. As roaming electrician John toured the engineering spaces to ensure proper operation and provided immediate response in the event of a accident or equipment failure. As electrical operator; he oversaw the operation of the electrical generating equipment and provided immediate response to power outages or other equipment failured. As load dispatcher, John was responsible for the ship's entire electrical system; he coordinated electrical operators and roaming electricians activities with the engineering officer to ensure ship wide power continutity and casualty response. He also functioned as the work center supervisor for Number 1 Reactor Electrical Division. In this position he was responsible for reviewing operating logs, assigning watch standers, scheduling and performing prevenative and corrective maintenance of electrical motors, generators, and distribution equipment.
