Johnrichard Ray Email and Phone Number
My name is JohnRichard Ray. I'm currently a sophomore Bioengineering major at Clemson University. I am also a member of the Clemson University Honors College. I am a recipient of the South Carolina Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and I have been on the Dean's list for the Fall 2021, Spring 2022, and Fall 2022 semesters. Outside of classes, I play the trumpet in the Clemson University Tiger Band. I am interested in microbiology (specifically studying diseases that can affect Humans), Genetic diseases (like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's Disease), Tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. I have had some previous research experience though Clemson university's creative inquiry program which gives Undergraduates the chance conduit research in a lab. I worked in a Microfluidics Lab from January 2022 – May 2022. In this lab, I worked in a lab observing the oscillation of microparticles in a microchannel at different frequencies. I would record the time it took for the microparticles to align. I was also tasked with calculating and making dilutions. I also was in a Motile Synth Cells Lab during, Spring 2023, where I prepared channels that were used to evaluate samples through an electron microscope. I also helped to prepare an actin and DNA solution that was then crosslinked. I am also a certified soccer referee in the state of South Carolina and have officiated U8-U12 games as an Assistant Referee. In high school, I took AP Research where I conducted a survey of students at my high school to determine their knowledge and perceptions COVID-19 transmission affects their safety behavior. I then ran data analysis using excel to check for trends. At the end of the class, I wrote a formal report and presented my findings in front of my teacher and other students in the class. During my senior year of high school, I participated in the SC Region 1 science fair where I won the American Water Works Association Water Drop Award and the U.S. Stockholm Junior Regional Water Prize Award for a project where I test and compared the contaminates of different sources of water (bottled, tap, fountain, lake).Contact information: Email: JohnRichard101@aol.com (Personal) or johnrir@g.clemson.edu (School)Cellular & Text: (919) 748-2507

Microfluidics Biosample Preparation InternClemson University College Of Engineering, Computing And Applied Sciences May 2023 - Aug 2023Clemson University, South Carolina, United StatesI interned for Dr. Pingshan Wang in the department of Electrical and Computer engineering at Clemson university as a part of the UPIC (University Professional Internship and Co-op) Program. Dr. Wang’s lab works on recording the signal of cells traveling through a sensor in a microchannel to correlate cell signal size to cell size and shape. As an intern, I started by shadowing a Graduate student to understand the basis of the research being conducted in the lab. Once I was comfortable enough with the procedure I prepared samples, ran experiments, and conducted data analysis of the cell signals with the other interns. Near the beginning of the internship, I helped Dr. Wang order materials needed to build some of the sensors. I was also tasked with creating replicas of different parts and sensors using SOLIDWORKS. Additionally, I designed a cell mixer and cell separator using articles in the field. I then created these designs in SOLIDWORKS and had them 3D-prited at the Clemson Makerspace in the Watt Innovation Center. I occasionally shadowed David Moline, one of the Technician Supervisors in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, to help with maintenance of the vacuum filtration pumps in the lab. Every Friday, I would present my progress to Dr. Wang and the other members of his lab.
