The key challenge for us was to grow within the larger corporate structure of our automotive company and the parent aluminum company. In the eventual breakup of the company, the CV division remained a solid value producer and is now a division of a major international CV leader. -
Vice President & DirectorAfl Automotive Aug 1997 - Jul 2003Led a significant internal process change for our $1.4B company to not only meet Y2K challenges, but to embrace lean manufacturing & 6-sigma initiatives. Our company was a product of both acquisition and new product growth with over 50 facilities and 40,000 employees. Our IT infrastructure was localized and primarily IBM-mainframe. Our best practices were isolated. My role was to lead the transformation into a cohesive multi-national company, with one IT infrastructure, and with best practices deployed in lean manufacturing (also called 6-sigma/TPS). As part of the transformation I held many titles, but the main thing for us was the taming of the supply chain (with ~50% of costs being raw material), with stability to allow excellence for our workers, and management commitment to problem solving.

Product Manager, Production Manager, Engineer, Sales & Marketing ManagerDixiewire Jan 1989 - Jul 1997Learned the hard lesson of a young engineer. We had a machine intensive operation that was totally dependent on the machine operators and the maintenance team. At DixieWire, we had a small but close team of about 150 associates. These were the hard years for US manufacturing to be competitive on quality, cost and delivery. We survived by implementing the total suite of best practices of SPC, team work, union/company management, and problem solving training. The training, coaching, and involvement with everyone in the Dixie team provided the foundation for everything since. I am extremely proud to have been part of that unique team there.
