I usually get hired by the investors on the board when they have a solid team in place but need someone experienced with a lot of previous "reps" to fill in some gaps or to help maximize urgent or upcoming value inflection points.I do this on a smoke jumping or longer term basis, whatever makes sense for the given circumstances.

We spun out the team and technology in a first for Samsung, they raised venture financing from Bloomberg Beta, Trinity Ventures, SAP.IO, and Silicon Valley Data Capital, and they were acquired by Perceptyx.

As the head of the San Francisco office, my role at Samsung Next was mixed between product building and venture investing. I sat on the four person US Investment Committee for our $150MM venture fund. I also built Samsung-owned teams and products aiming to eventually grow into large software and services lines for Samsung.

I co-taught the Venture Capital 1 and 2 courses with Dan Siciliano of the Rock Center for Corporate Governance. VC2 helps law students understand the startup process from an entrepreneur's perspective so that they can either start their own businesses or become more effective advocates for their clients who start businesses. VC2 is an update of the Entrepreneurship in Practice course I created and taught at the University of Chicago for three academic years.VC1 focuses on the VC industry structure, LP/GP relationships, and general foundational items in the venture industry.

ShopRunner acquired ShopSanity, where I was co-founder and CEO. As Chief Product Officer, I managed the design, user experience, retailer integrations, presales, and product management teams.ShopRunner was backed by $206 million from Alibaba and American Express and eventually acquired by FedEx.

The ShopSanity consumer application helps frequent shoppers stay organized and save money. The site stores all online and offline receipts securely in one place and sends alerts when items go on sale within a retailer's price adjustment window.The consumer application powers a big data business providing anonymous analytics and a private, anonymized targeting platform to retailers and manufacturers.ShopSanity was acquired by ShopRunner in February 2012. I ran the owned and operated search business (Dogpile.com, Infospace.com, Metacrawler.com, Dogreatgood.com, Webcrawler.com), the marketing and technology departments, and the new business initiatives at Infospace. Total headcount in my groups was about 100 of the 150 employees at the company.I joined Infospace through its acquisition of WebPosition, which I had purchased from WebTrends.

I taught "Entrepreneurship in Practice" as an adjunct faculty member. The goal of the course was to help law students understand the startup process from an entrepreneur's perspective so that they could either start their own businesses or become more effective advocates for their clients who start businesses.

I purchased WebPosition from WebTrends in a small LBO in early 2009. WebPosition makes tools that help small businesses and agencies measure the performance of their SEO efforts. I exited the LBO 5 months later in a sale to Infospace with realized cash on cash return in excess of 50x. I then joined Infospace as GM, Search.

Green Hedges was a startup backed by El Dorado Ventures that worked to launch an entirely new line of consumer focused financial guaranty insurance. We were the first and only company licensed to write this line of business in the US, but did not pursue the business further.

At the board's request, I returned to WebTrends temporarily to help the company through a major management transition. I stabilized the team, triaged the existing projects, improved the engineering process, executed a RIF, and helped reset the culture and boost morale.

I managed the business unit formed by WebTrends' acquisition of ClickShift, where I was CEO. I was responsible for product direction, sales training, integration of the acquisition, and general evangelism of the advertising efficiencies gained with good use of web analytics.

ClickShift uses complex statistical models to optimize web advertising.ClickShift raised $6M of Series A financing from El Dorado Ventures and US Venture Partners before being acquired by WebTrends in 2006. After the acquisition, I became GM of the business unit formed by the acquisition, and the ClickShift shareholders took a board seat at WebTrends.

Represented clients in venture financings, corporate transactions, and various litigation matters.

I joined NBCi through its acquisition of flyswat, where I was CEO. As VP of Product Management, I led 25 employees responsible for product management and data analysis. Products managed by my group accounted for 80% of NBCi's annual revenue and most of its millions of users. The data analysis team identified under-performing partners and focused resources throughout the company.Separately, I renegotiated NBCi's distribution contracts, standardized the advertising platform, and streamlined the product specification process.

I founded flyswat with Ray Krouse (CFO) and Leo Chang (CTO). We grew the company to about 60 employees before selling to NBCi for $120M. Our investors included US Venture Partners, Amicus Investments, and Angel Investors.

I developed the first generation Remote Personnel Monitoring System, a watch that Navy personnel could wear that would transmit their pulse and location to the ship's central computer. My responsibility included the electronics of the entire watch (an analog sensor, a digital FPGA, and the RF upconvert) and the pre-baseband sections of the corresponding receivers.
