Elected to two consecutive terms during a period of rapid commercial and residential expansion. I was a strong advocate for infrastructure improvements and logical land use. Major responsibilities included representing about 5000 residents, reviewing and approving the annual city budget, interviewing executive-level candidates, reviewing executive staff performance, and dealing with legal actions against the city.

Appointed as a commissioner, then elected chairman, of this advisory body. Duties included approving plats, recommending zoning changes, reviewing special use permits, and working with consultants on a master land use plan. Served on several committees which reviewed zoning and subdivision regulations and suggested changes for Board action. During my chairmanship we developed the first mission statement to guide our work.

Served as a project engineer on a multi-discipline team that analyzed battery and electrical system performance on behalf of Ford Motor Company and BMW of North America, and later presented our findings and recommendations to those customers. Designed original equipment batteries for Ford, Nissan, and Chrysler to meet their performance requirements; this involved the use of proprietary design methods, building of prototypes, and demonstrating product conformance to specifications. I also served as the company's OEM engineering liaison to Chrysler and participated on an SAE committee that studied increasing automobile system voltages beyond 12 volts.

Process engineer for three work areas of a lead-acid automotive battery manufacturing plant, working extensively with union maintenance and production personnel to maintain and improve product quality. Provided plant engineering support during a major plant expansion, which involved supervising both in-plant maintenance staff and construction contractors. Retrofitted several aging, relay-based control systems with PLCs using in-house staff; programmed and taught PLC ladder-logic; and directly supervised third-shift maintenance personnel.
