Based on over a decade of R&D, Carney Labs has harnessed the power of big data, cloud computing, mobile, social, and learning sciences to create MARi: a personal analytics platform for school and career. MARi is currently in use by thousands of students at schools across south-central Virginia. MARi is still in private beta and will be released as a public beta in 2015. Is MARi a tool that will make a positive dent in the universe? Absolutely - and we are working to make this a reality!

Tanzania Education Fund, or TEF, is a non-profit organization that supports a 350-student K-12 school in Tanzania Africa. I have had the opportunity to travel twice to the school to spend with time with the students and teachers - and each time I am overwhelmed by eagerness of the students to learn and the commitment of the teachers to positively impact their community and country through education. I started at IIAA as a communications coordinator supporting the 30,000 member trade association with general support for the communication and public relations department. As a natural computer geek I introduced desktop publishing, database tools, and other technologies into our work. After two years in the communications department, I was asked to lead the IT department. In my role as Director of IT, I led the transition from a Wang centralized terminal system to an IBM AS400 client server solution with desktop PC's running standard word processing and spreadsheet tools. I led the requirements definition, procurement, and implementation of a new association software management system that covered the spectrum of finance to membership. I conducted the bulk of the employee training required for the transition - from basic mouse skills to advanced financial reporting. At IIAA, I formally combined my communications background with a heavy dose of enterprise technology. It was one of the sparks that began to ignite my passion around using technology to communicate in faster and more effective ways... applying the power of technology to learning, understanding, and accelerating results.

Upon graduating NC State, I enlisted in the Army National Guard and became a sheet metal mechanic for Apache helicopters - after completing Basic Training at Fort Dix and AIT at Fort Eustis. After moving from Raleigh to Northern Virginia in 1989, I enrolled in the Virginia Officer Candidate School and became an infantry officer. I completed my Infantry Officer Basic School at Fort Benning in the summer of 1992 and proudly served in Company C, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, Leesburg.
