My job entails the collection and analysis of water and gas samples from various plant systems. More advanced instrumentation used in such analyses include UV-VIS spectroscopy, ion-chromatography, X-Ray fluorescence and gamma spectroscopy.

Courses Instructed: Principles of Chemistry (CHE 1211 and CHE 1211L) & Survey of Chemistry (CHE 1151 and CHE 1151L)As the only chemistry instructor, it was my sole responsibility in developing the course’s curriculum based on state standards, select laboratory experiments and manage chemical inventory. Digital media has been integrated into the course through the use of on-line homework assignments, additional practice modules, YouTube videos, including videos I created, and additional supplemental material. Additionally, I have introduced the use of take-home laboratory kits into the CHE 1151L course, which has allowed greater flexibility to student scheduling, especially being that many of the students work full-time and have children. I also provided practice quizzes and exams available to students so the students are aware of my expectations and of the formatting of the assessments. Additionally, I hold office hours, which are not required as an adjunct instructor, and answer e-mails throughout the day, at night and over weekends.

Courses Taught: Physical Science, Biology, Earth ScienceOutside of the traditional teacher responsibilities of a teacher, like developing the course curriculum based on the state standards, managing the classroom, grading, etc., I focused on developing personal relationships with the student body and expanding the curriculum to cover interesting, relevant and identifiable content to motivate and engage the students, which are key struggles for a Title I school. Additionally, I emphasized my expectations to the students by preparing study guides and practices exams. My efforts were proven to be effective as the standardized test scores in Biology were continually improved during my tenure. In my second year of employment, the school's test scores were exceeding even those of the state average and achieved the second highest scores within our RESA.

Project: Quantification of Organic Compounds Through Laser Desorption Time-of-Flight Mass SpectrometryMy research at UC Davis included the identification, through HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), and quantification, through LD-TOF MS (laser-desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry), of trace wood burning markers found in size differentiated, time-resolved samples of particulate matter (PM) collected in Yosemite National Park using a DRUM impactor during a wildfire event. Archived satellite images, collected from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), and mapped air trajectories, through HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model), confirmed the movement of air masses originating from the wildfire source to the sampling station. These markers were of interest due to the high occurrence of wildfires in California and the implications they have on pollution, visibility and human health.

Courses: General Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Physical Chemistry: Quantum Mechanics, and Advanced Methods in Physical ChemistryAs a TA, I was responsible in leading discussion classes, instructing laboratory, grading lab reports and exams, holding office hours and managing rosters and grade books. During discussion classes I would summarize the current chapter, which was being taught during lecture, and solved example problems. I received many outstanding review, including:“I think John is definitely the best TA I have had yet. He was a great resource for my success in this class. He is very knowledgeable and helpful in discussion sections and greatly helps students in understanding this difficult material”“I think that John was extremely prepared when bringing in the subject material from each chapter. Not only did he summarize the key points, he also did examples there were not so simple”“John Schwind is by far the best Chem TA (and TA in general) that I’ve gotten since coming to Davis. The way he organizes and explains things during discussion made me feel like I didn’t even need to go to lecture. He is very understanding and approachable and has the potential to be a great professor.”“Without John I would be a lot more confused. (The professor) would try and teach us something that made no sense for 2 lectures and John could clearly explain it in 20 minutes. I always went to discussion for this reason.”.

Courses: General Chemistry and Organic ChemistryThe head teaching assistant was responsible for arranging meetings with the other teaching assistants, management of rosters for the whole course, setting up exam grading dates and times and act as a liaison between the professor and all the TAs.

As A QA/QC chemist I was required to operate under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as defined by the FDA. I became proficient in the following techniques as specified by its respective Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Work Instructions (WI) for the process, release and stability testing of manufactured products and raw materials using the following instruments: FT-IR, gas and liquid chromatography (GC and HPLC), pH meter, auto-titrators, tensile strength apparatus and balances. I was also responsible for testing water quality, which included pH, odor and color test-methods.

Course: General ChemistryAs undergraduate TA, I assisted in lab and grading exams.

Project: Degradation of DDT Using High Energy RadiationsMy research included the study the degradation of DDT in multiple environments by irradiation, using various high-energy sources. DDT was studied in a neat environment, micellar solution and in organic solvents (e.g. chloroform, hexane and ethanol). Irradiation was completed using alpha, gamma, X-rays and UV light. Thin-layer chromatography was used to test for the presence of degradation products. Decomposition products of DDT were isolated using preparative TLC and identified by spectroscopic methods.
