Here's the game-change: "Big Data is making customers really smart. Customers used to trust large companies with well known brands. Now smarter customers know more - a lot more. They look to product and service recommendations coming from machine learning systems, ratings, referrals, social media, and links from other customers. Increasingly, they now trust these alternatives more than they trust established brands. At the same time, new disruptive businesses are being formed that are upping the customer experience by using Big data and machine learning systems and significantly reducing the delivery cost of products and services. Result: New billion dollar businesses are taking advantage of the network effect - especially relevant when the millennial generation are potential customers - and building billion dollar companies very quickly. Eventually this market shift from producers-in-control to customers-in-control will touch every industry, everywhere. Its a great time to be an entrepreneur!"

In 1983, Steve Jobs, Apple Computers Inc.'s co-founder and president at the time, asked John Sculley, "Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?" Sculley took over as Apple's CEO in 1983. Despite his lack of technology expertise, he and Jobs saw eye-to-eye on marketing strategy. John Sculley was recruited by Steve Jobs to rejuvenate the aging Apple II sales. In 1983, the Apple II was the company’s only source of cash flow for the next 3 years while Steve Jobs created and later would launch the Macintosh Computer. Steve Jobs wanted John Sculley to teach him how to build Apple into a global brand. In the early 1980’s no one from Silicon Valley was experienced in big brand consumer marketingThe company enjoyed a successful run over the next few years. Macintosh sales reignited on the heels of improvements in desktop publishing technology, while the color capabilities of the Macintosh 2 and the portable PowerBook series dazzled customers. Annual sales grew from $800 million to $8 billion during his 10 years in charge.

In 1987, I wrote a book called Odyssey, From Pepsi to Apple. It was published by Harper & Row and was a Business Book Best Seller. This book tells the story of the early days, my partnership at the time with Steve Jobs, and how experience marketing was brought from Pepsi to Apple.

President/Ceo Pepsi Cola Co

Purchase, New York, Us

I was hired by Pepsi-Cola Company as their first MBA and as a trainee in 1967. I worked in market research and new product development eventually heading Pepsi-Cola Co's R&D. In 1970 I was made Pepsi-Cola Company's youngest vice president for marketing. It was here that we pioneered many consumer marketing firsts: 2 liter plastic bottle, chain trading areas, mass merchandisers, drug chain marketing, completely redesigning beverage merchandising display equipment, Pepsi Challenge taste test, and what I later took to Apple - experience marketing. By 1977, I was Pepsi-Cola Company’s youngest President & CEO. In 19878, Pepsi passed The Coca-Cola Company to become the largest selling consumer product in stores in the US as measured by AC Nielsen. Pepsi had moved from being a strong regional brand 8 years earlier to a highly profitable and major nationwide consumer brand.
