Following my studies in the field of physics & optics, I spent my early career with Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies in their fibre-optic component operation. It was here that I worked in technical research, process engineering & device design roles in optical fibres, lasers & optoelectronic detector products.I founded an IT business in 1999 which I operated & grew for 10 years before successfully selling & moving back to a role in the photonics industry, in particular optical thin films. My current role at Helia Photonics includes business & technology innovation, process development, technical sales & equipment engineering as well as marketing, design & optical analysis. The products I am actively involved in include imaging & detector systems, lasers & laser optics, optical filters & fibre sensors. I am involved with the applications & project management associated with research grants in collaboration with UK/international partners & a number of universities.

Originally established in East Anglia EVE Networks specialised in computer network design, installation & IT Support, web site design, web-based systems development & hosting for a range of small to medium-sized businesses. I moved the business to Edinburgh in 2002, where it continued to grow successfully until it was sold in 2009.
I developed cleanroom processes using state-of-the-art photolithography equipment including near-field holography masks & laser interference equipment. I also designed & developed detector arrays for high-speed fibre-optic communication.
Initially part of the advanced components group designing active & passive optical amplifiers for undersea fibre communications, I then moved into optoelectronic device R&D with projects including miniature optical isolators, DFB laser design & manufacture, DFB grating fabrication & high speed optical detector array chips. Tasks included test apparatus.
