About John Showalter

From my early years as a 14-year-old researching DNA in a microbiology lab, moving specimen samples into water baths, my attraction to the data side of healthcare was evident. During my years of conducting tedious, precise research, I witnessed something remarkable: when technology was brought into the lab that automated my work, we were able to sample 10X more specimens each day. Modern technology accelerated our research and was the key to improving patient care. The need to acquire and utilize modern technology was reinforced as I studied biomedical engineering and medical informatics. During this time, I accepted a position to assist with an EHR implementation. The project fostered my profound interest in informatics and desire to improve patient outcomes on a large scale. I recognized a tremendous opportunity to leverage the data being gathered for cutting edge initiatives geared towards better controlling diseases. However, as I soon learned, there are many challenges to improving patient care in today’s dynamic healthcare industry. In the world of healthcare artificial intelligence solutions, the vision of what the technology can do doesn’t always align with market demands. In order to close this gap, there needs to be established communication channels to ensure the accurate translation of end users’ needs into effective technology solutions. It’s easy to say we need to enhance product alignment, but it’s another thing to set the path and make it happen. As a collaborative and future-oriented leader, I am focused on identifying barriers and devising solutions to bring my organization’s vision to life in the healthcare industry. This approach has not only brought measurable results throughout my career such as building a state-of-the-art analytics center that involved developing a budget from $0–$6.5M, but has also led to several recognitions, including the Premier 100 IT Leaders award in 2017. My passion for gathering complex data and putting it into the hands of clinicians has led to our clinicians becoming more informed and better equipped to improve patient outcomes on a large scale. More than ever, I am determined to help my team overcome obstacles, accelerate research, and acquire modern technology needed to harness AI healthcare solutions and elevate patient outcomes.

After the seamless EPIC integration, my analytical leadership and ability to execute profitable business initiatives led to a promotion. I was brought on to direct an institution-wide strategy for clinical enterprise and research and ICD-10 implementation. In my new role, I leveraged my collaborative and influential management style to direct 2 verticals for a $1.6B medical center parallel to the CIO and build a state-of-the-art analytics center from the ground up. This required me to devise a 5-year business plan, developing a budget from $0-$6.5M. Select Contributions: We successfully integrated MedeAnalytics clinical data and claims database to EHR which generated greater than 1M annual transactions. This integration led to supporting Centers for Medicare and Medicaid claims access services and the tech being rolled into national Medicare. I collaborated with executive leaders to formulate the technology and informatics business plan for UMMC’s $81M research mission. I led the transition to ICD-10 key performance metric scorecards across 18 academic departments and saw a $2M jump in revenue as a result of implementing clinicians’ training on proper software use. Supported IT startups with product strategy including M*Modol’s first enterprise cloud and EHR integration, contributing to the company being purchased by 3M for $1B.

As the CMIO, I coordinated with the chief application officer to lead the IT department through 2 budget cycles, executing a budget of $86M. I managed 13 physician champions, monitored 85 analysts, and oversaw 250 employees. I was recruited to strategize and lead the $90M system-wide EPIC integration. By establishing a strong working relationship with the EPIC CEO, we were able to outline an effective strategy to integrate EPIC across 5 hospitals, 95 clinics, and 12K clinicians. Our joint efforts resulted in the EPIC integration being completed within 1 day. Nonessential systems were soon eliminated, and transcription costs were reduced, saving a combined total of $8M annually. Select Contributions: Another result from the EPIC integration was transferring from a paper-based organization to an electronic one. This brought the hospitals and ambulatory to level 6 on the HIMSS EMR Adoption Model, previously holding at a level 2.
