John is a member of the Board of Directors of American Axle & Manufacturing (NYSE: AXL), serving on its Audit Committee and as Chair of its Technology Committee. He is also a member of the Board of TI Fluid Systems (LSE: TIFS), serving on it's Audit and Remuneration Committees, the latter as Chair. John was previously on the Board of CEVA Logistics AG, serving on its Compensation Committee and as Chair of its Risk and Compliance Committee before its acquisition by CMA-CGM in May 2019. John also served as Chairman of the Board of Covisint (NASDAQ: COVS) until its sale to OpenText in July 2017.John is Principal, Eagle Advisors, a business strategy and performance improvement consultancy, and is currently serving as advisor to Enginetics LLC and Arnold Magnetics.John Smith designed and led the successful turnarounds of Allison Transmission and Cadillac, writing a book about the latter effort called “Fin Tales: Saving Cadillac, America’s Luxury Icon”. He also led the development of General Motors'​ viability plans in late 2008/early 2009, which helped secure Federal Government support for the company's successful restructuring effort. Appointed GM's first global product planning leader in 2005, John's team developed profit-maximizing plans for the company's engineering and capital budgets based on a set of vehicle platforms that could be shared globally. John was also deeply involved in GM's alternate propulsion efforts, including the development of the company's first hybrid driveline while at Allison Transmission.John has lived and worked in Europe, and has had extensive business dealings with GM's business partners in Japan, Korea and China.
